USC Internet

Hi, how fast is the internet at USC dorms (specifically the radisson)?

And how strict are they regarding torrent downloads and the like? Where I'm from pirated stuff is everywhere and accepted as an everyday thing, even by authorities. Is it risky downloading torrents?

thanks

Hahaha me too

Just get peerguardian or something that blocks you from being pinged by those tracking bots from music companies.

^ is peerguardian the best solution?

as a recent usc graduate who downloaded at least 500 gigs off torrents the last 4 years. USC internet is very very fast, I got ****ed when I had to come home and as long as you’re not uploading you should be fine. Their speeds in the dorms are T1-T3 speeds.

USC ResNet speed is 10 mbps down. That’s about 1.1 MB/s. Depending on where you’re from, it could feel sluggish to you. (I get a little over twice that at home, so it was a bit of an adjustment.) There’s also a cap of, I believe, 10 GB per day total up and down, which resets at midnight. You’re also limited to 2 GB/hour in traffic, I believe. The exact numbers are on the ITS site somewhere.

The first time you use a torrent, you’ll get a message letting you know that they won’t protect you if they’re asked for your information. From there, it’s as dangerous when transferring data illegally as it is anywhere else in the US. You can talk to people about what risks they’re willing to take if you’re not familiar with policies here.

do i just check the P2P box, or do i have to block educational institutes and universities?
