USC merit scholarship

i know i hate to do a chance thread, but i was wondering what usc is looking for to qualify for presidential or trustee.

Like what was last year's SAT range for presidential or trustee

I haven't seen those stats posted anywhere, but I can offer some speculation.

For Trustee, I would be surprised if anyone less than a 2150 was awarded a scholarship. 2200-2250 would probably be the midpoint. Of course, everything else needs to be extremely strong as well: GPA, essays, E.C's and especially the intervew.

For Presidential it'd a bit easier. Midpoint probably somewhere between 2150-2200.

Again, just speculation. :)

here's a good thread on the subject: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=188036&highlight=trustee

here is my stats:
SAT: 2300
SAT 2: 790.790.790
Gpa: 4.0 uw

i never did well on psat: 199
do you have to be a national merit finalist or semifinalist to be considered for trustee?

No, I was commended and got the Trustee Scholarship.

Madamebovary, my stats were around yours, and I got trustee (2330; 800, 790, 750; 3.9). However merit scholarships are definitely not based on GPA/SAT scores, though they are important. I actually talked to the student who was at my scholarship interview (she and I are in the same organization, and she actually remembered me 6 months after the interview!) and she told me that although GPA and SAT scores are important, USC looks more at the rest of the application (extracurriculars, letters of rec, ESSAYS etc.) and THEN looks at the GPA/SAT to make sure that they are up to par.

At Explore USC last year, I believe they said that the average score for trustee candidates was 2200 or so. As Nikara mentioned, you don't have to be a national merit finalist/semifinalist to be considered for trustee, though being one will guarantee you at least the presidential scholarship, so it won't hurt :)

If you have any questions feel free to send me a PM. I remember last year when I was freaking out about scholarships and I needed all the help and advice I could get lol

thanks for all the input. i guess the interview and the essays are just as important as the score.

that's good for me (2080 SAT but great essays/interview/ECs/ recommendations). does anybody know when the december ACT scores come out? i'm really depending on those scores because i'm certain i did better on ACT.

o yah; one more big question: how do we know we qualify for presidential and trustee? do they mail you your acceptance letter first and then a scholarship letter? and about when will we find out.

yeah i wanna know how they notify you of scholarship. i don't want to get an acceptance letter and freak out because i don't know if i've gotten a scholarship or not.

You get the scholarship letter in early February, I believe. Your acceptance letter will come a week or two before the scholarship letter, but I remember I "cheated" a little bit last year lol. I checked which scholarship I was up for a few days before my actual scholarship letter came. You can do this by logging into Explore USC (probably not activated yet, but just keep it in mind), and it will say whether you're up for presidential or trustee.

Oh, and to those who will be discouraged by a presidential letter... being up for presidential or trustee means nothing, it's all about the interview. One other person in my school was up for the trustee scholarship, and he ended up getting the presidential scholarship. Also, I do remember hearing of some people (a CC-er too, I believe) who were up for presidential and got bumped up to trustee. So even if you are being considered for presidential, don't lose hope, and if you're being considered for trustee, don't slack off and try to do well in your interview!

i would be content with either.

Good answer. I'm sure that you have a great chance of getting either scholarship. BTW I love Madame Bovary :)

me too. i love Madamebovary. ill keep you posted Misoobishi

i think there should be a CC scholarship...since i suggested it, i should probably get the first one. just a thought.

If you have a low GPA, does that automatically put you out of the running?
I have a 3.53, does this mean I have no chance?

I wouldn't say no chance, but your chances are significantly lower than those with higher GPA's. I believe the average GPA of scholarship recipients was around 3.8-4.0, somewhere in there. However, you never know since USC does place a lot of emphasis on other things. Good luck!

so does everyone who applied to meet the Merit Aid deadline find out their acceptance decision in Feb. regardless of whether or not they get the scholarship? since the scholarship letter comes after the acceptance letter...?

We just got a letter in Feb saying that S didn't qualify for any merit awards except possibly if he was a NMF he'd get 1/2 tuition merit Presidential award; S didn't get his USC acceptance letter until sometime in March.

nah, if you don't get the scholarship you get your acceptance or rejection along with everyone else. However, USC has sort of a rolling notification. Some people get their acceptances in February, some in March, and some in early April.
