I got a letter from USC today. Some of the letter said:

"Although I am sorry to say you were not selected for further consideration for either of these scholarships, you are still being considered for other scholarships. This year we expect to offer admission to about 8400 freshmen. So far we have notified roughly 15 % of those students, which leaves plenty of room for great candidates. I appreciate your patience as you wait for us to finish this hard work during the coming weeks. Please be assured we are working diligently and methodically to ensure that you and all other applicants receive the utmost consideration in our process. We will have more news for you about your application in late March/ early April, when the remaining admission decisions will be finalized. Thank you for applying to USC, you will be hearing from us soon."

I'm kind of confused. Can someone help clarify this for me. I applied for the Dec. 1 deadline. All insights would be helpful :)

Sorry I can’t offer any clarification, but what part of the US are you from?
Does anyone know if they’re notifying all scholarship applicants of their status (whether they’ll be considered, or whether they will not be considered [like in this instance])? If so, does that mean that no news is good news/slow mail…or…):?

I’m not sure what you’re confused about. The “no scholarship” letter is pretty clear. It’s telling you that you have not been selected to interview for the Presidential or Trustee scholarship, that you are STILL under consideration for admission and will hear before April first, and that you could still be considered for other scholarships that don’t require an interview. Yes, some people did receive acceptance/scholarship interviews, and yes, some other people seem to have received early acceptances with no scholarship interview. But still, only 15% of acceptances have been mailed, which means 85% are left.

Basically, it’s tell you you have to wait. I know it’s hard and that others have already received their acceptances, but try to be patient. Good luck!

What’s confusing is why some kids have received the “no scholarship” letter and why others have received nothing at all… Is there a distinction or did USC just decide randomly who, of the not accepted yet pool, would receive the letter?

My guess is they only sent letters to those students who applied by the scholarship deadline. So if you applied Dec 2 or later you would not receive a letter of any kind until the regular decisions come out.

My S applied in late November and has not received anything from USC at this point. We live in So Cal so you would think he would have received the “no scholarship” letter already. Shrug. Maybe that letter is being sent in waves and he’ll get it this week.

SDMom and others, I know how it feels not to get the “no scholarship” letter when others who applied by December 1st HAVE gotten it. But last year, my son was one of many who NEVER got the “no scholarship” letter. He also was not asked for mid-year grades, when it seemed like all of his friends were. (And yes, it seemed there were a couple of waves of these letters.)

Thanks jazz/shreddermom, thats good to know! But you just have to wonder if there is some rhyme or reason as to who gets the “no scholarship” letters, and who doesn’t. Well I am sure there is a reason, but its like reading tea leaves trying to figure it out!

I have a friend that received a phone call from USC about this a couple days ago too. It just means that you have a “likely” to get accepted. You probably are not going for the Big 2 scholarships, but you have a shot at something smaller (eg Deans scholarship).

So I’d say, you still have a great shot at USC. Just hang on for a while longer.

Just got the “no scholarship” letter in the mail today in So Cal, as did at least one other student from my S’s HS. No postmark on envelope (its a bulk mailing), so not sure when it was mailed, but it suggests others on the east coast may still get the letter later in the week.

SDmom and Athene, I can assure you the “no scholarhsip” letter does not mean anything except that you did not receive one of the two big scholarships! It is certainly not a “likely” letter. Just peruse last year’s discussions - tons of students received the “no scholarship” letter and were not accepted, just as many who did not receive it WERE accepted. My son asked his USC admissions counselor if not getting it meant anything, and she replied that he “should have” gotten it (that in fact everyone who applied by Dec. 1 “should have” gotten it if they did not receive P or T.) So it was either a mailing glitch, or a USC glitch.

Please don’t read more in to getting or not getting the “no scholarship” than is there. It means you are not being considered for the P or T scholarship and nothing more!

On another note, Stalkermom and blueflish just posted that their kids, who received an acceptance last week with no P or T Explore date, just today received letters saying they have the Dean’s scholarship. So perhaps more of those accepted without Presidential or Trustee finalist will be getting Dean’s or other scholarships!

I live in Northern California (San Jose) and received the “No Scholarship” letter in the mail today. Alamemom also confirmed that this letter has no relation to acceptance.
