USC or UNC?

diontechristmas sounds a bit bitter to me. I think that you should do what you think is best. The last thing you want to do is go to a school that you won’t like as much just because you don’t want to fill out some paperwork. That is pure laziness. If you really want to go to USC (which it seems like you do), then go!!! Don’t look back! I have no personal inclination towards either school, so this is a completely unbiased opinion. USC and UNC are both great schools, but people that have posted are looking to generally. It is true UNC is a fabulous school…to some people. You seem like it has been your dream to go to USC, so go! You stated, “I’ve always wanted to go to USC more than UNC”. That is a direct quote. You answered your own question. Go where you will be happy. USC!!

I’m not reading this whole thread but if what languagefreak said you stated is true then…

GO TO USC!!! unless you really can’t afford it because that’s where your heart seems to lie.

How do I sound bitter? I didn’t apply to either school…

Ehh idk, you just seemed like he was wrong in verbalizing his situation because he’s lucky to be in that position.

i’ve discussed this with my parents a bit and i can definitely tell that my dad wants me to go to UNC because he thinks it’s easier for me to move in/move out plus it’s a lot cheaper. Plus, he’s ultimately paying for my education, so I guess he does kind of have a say. But, my mom kind of wants me to go to USC because my mom’s entire side of the family is on the west coast/L.A. area. I know it’s my decision and they acknowledge that, but i almost wish they’d both push for one school to help me decide.

So a couple more questions: do you guys think that i’ll have a better experience going to a private school than a public school? does anyone else get the sense that USC alumni are more of a family than UNC alumni? and also, my mom asked me whether i felt i could handle USC because she thinks it’ll be a lot more competitive than UNC. anyone else think this might be an issue?

I’ve gone to both, which were both large, and there’s really not much of a difference. It really depends on what things are important to you. UNC and USC are very similar in most ways.

No difference between the public and the private in my experience. Some of my best friends are those I went to graduate school with at Carolina. My son’s best friends in LA are those he went to USC with including his roommate from his first year.

If you want to live on the west coast and go into business there, the USC family will be a great entr

Other than some classes being smaller in a private school it won’t make that much difference. Also USC is very relaxed, everyone seems to have a west coast laid back attitude. PEople try to get good grades, but it’s not as big of a competition that you find on the east coast.

I was out of state at UNC and had many friends from Connecticut. Most of them hung out with other kids from Greenwich and New England. In fact, my fraternity (coed) was mostly out of state students many who prepped together in New England or were on the lacrosse or soccer teams. You should check out your frat at the both schools. Some of the frats at UNC have very distinct flavors not present in other chapters. For example, some are southern preppie types, or some most of the brothers are from Charlotte etc. I do not know anything about the frats at USC except most of the kids I know who go there are nonGreek.
When you apply to Grad school, UNC puts you back at the end of the line again for their programs as an out of state student. The UNC grad schools then prefer out of staters that did not attend UNC.
I am not sure what major you are in but you should check out the faculty at UNC in your major and see what the faculty is like. Many of the faculty in my major was inbred.
I loved UNC but was always considered an out of stater.
I live in the SF Bay area and few people even talk about UNC out here. It does not have the prestige it did when I was on the east coast or when I was in Med school/residency in Texas.
My son goes to USC but could have gone to most Uc’s and many privates schools around the country. The flavor of the campus, class size and professors I met there are much different than UNC. If you plan on living on the west coast it is a no brainer where to go.

Now, I do not feel USC is worth paying the outrageous tuition it charges so if you can go to UNC for alot cheaper I would consider Chapel Hill

FWIW (and it probably shouldn’t be much) USC basketball is in the middle of an epic collapse. I don’t know that they’ll finish last in the Pac-10 next year, but they’re going to struggle for the next few years. UNC basketball is in a whole different ballpark.

Tim Floyd, head basketball coach at USC just resigned

And they’ve lost (approximately) 4 players and 4 recruits in the last month. They’re down to like 7 scholarship players (might have to have Lil Romeo start at PG :P). They’re also going to have trouble getting a new coach for next year given the fact that it’s June, and they may be screwed semi-long term because of possible NCAA penalties (same goes for USC Football though the penalties will probably be lighter)
