USC Parents Thread

Thinking about all you parent and students waiting for your decisions! Son is a happy freshman Trojan! I hope e next few days go quickly for you all!

Brought forward for new parents to read…

And so it begins…D has been accepted, and is excited to start her USC adventure. I’ll be searching for answers, but wanted to say I’ve read the last couple of pages, and am reassured that this is the best decision for her.

I have over the past few months read every page of the financial aid thread, but a comment made by a poster on prouduscdad’s recent thread has me wondering.

Can some USC parents comment on continuation of need-based grants beyond freshman year? Assuming no major changes in family income, can we expect the level of aid to be relatively consistent? With the FA listed on our usconnect, USC looks doable. If that grant were to be removed in sophomore year - definitely not.

Snowdog, we are eagerly awaiting our 2012-2013 FA for our DS. He is a freshman this year. If you income stys the same, your aid should stay the same with one exception. The amount of student loans goes up to $6500 in sophomore year and to $7500 in junior and senior year. My son took just the subsidized loans ths year and is carefully managing his money. So far he hasn’t needed the additional $2000 in unsubsidized loans.

We have a DS completing his freshman year. We received grant money along with loans and work study last year. The financial aid officer who helped us navigate FA last year told us that as we spend down assets to pay for college, our package will increase accordingly each year. I am not sure how that will play out and am eagerly awaiting notice of next year’s award. The FA counselors are very patient and sincere in wanting to make USC a reality for admitted students. I would encourage you to contact them.

Brought forward …one more time for new admitted students.

Son Number 1 has just gotten an incredible job! Yippee! We are all so proud of him! He is a senior finishing a major in Compter Science\Games. I cannot tell you how this major has put him him at the top of the pool for all the jobs he has looked at. USC has been the best possible experience. Now on to graduation! I’ll post an update on that day with a photo.

Congrats bbgg!

Bbgg,

As the proud momma of a newly-admitted CS (games) major, I am thrilled to hear that! I am so excited to have 2 sons at USC!

Congrats bbgg, you must be so happy:)

I remember your helpful replies during S1 2010 time period. Now S2 has been accepted to USC and he is thrilled!

If you have any tips for him or me on how to succeed in the CS major that would be wonderful. I assume it’s a tough major.

Thank you to all the wonderful folks on this forum!

Hey Pixel,

It looks like we have a bit in common. My S1 was also admitted in 2010 and S2 was just accepted for the CS major.

Hi Legacymom! It would be nice for the kids to connect. s1 went to USC for one semester and has been on leave of absence since Dec’10. No complaints - he is doing extremely well launching his own startup, will return to USC at some point.

This also means he has basically no idea about the courses/professors to recommend for S2.

Hey USC parents, I’ve been researching the payment plans and have a couple of questions about USCepay vs. USC payment plan.

As I understand it, you can use credit cards without a fee on epay (yay), but that means paying a semester of tuition all at once. Correct? Or you can apply each semester for $50 and have the tuition (only tuition, or tuition/room/board?) divided into 5 monthly payments. (Eliminating the need for Tuition Management Services I guess.) It’s a little challenging to figure out what is due and when, and what the options are for paying.

Daughter is starting to tilt away from UCLA and toward USC…

Hi Snowdog-

You can sign up for the USC payment plan for $50 each semester and divide all university billed expenses (tuition, room/board, lab fees, etc.) into 5 monthly payments. You can pay by credit card every month if you wish. There will be a prompt where you register the credit card(s) you will use.

So, you can pay the entire amount up front by credit card or use monthly epay by credit card. It’s a great way to tap into credit card cash back incentives!

Minnymom, thanks!

My son is admitted for January. We are on the east coast. He has been talking to some other boys about going to cc out there and possibly sharing an apartment. Is anyone else doing this?

Heading out this morning for commencement :)

CONGRATULATIONS to the Class of 2012!

It was so fun hanging out here with the other '12 parents… madbean, ellebud, Sequoia, Fauxnom, (and of course the mysterious “rainmama”)… so many more. Thanks to cc411, who guided us through our Fall 2008 application “season,” and to Georgia Girl for being such an incredible source of information and encouragement for all. A very special thanks to Jazz/Shreddermom from our entire family :)

Thank you,** USC**, for these four years.

And thank you to Lamedaughter for being unique, interesting, compassionate, passionate and brilliant, or in other words, a typical USC student  Congratulations to Lamedaughter on all of her accomplishments, the most recent being Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa. This lame mom could not be prouder.

Baccalaureate tonite at 5 pm starts off the celebration! Sp proud of Son No 1! Despite great odds he is graduating college and has a job! We are so proud of him! He has learned a great deal about himself. USC was a tremendous support to him throughout his 4 years! Fight On!

Congrats alamemom and Family! And bbgg and Family!

And congrats to the Class of 2012!
