Hi! I am looking into going to USC for the popular music major. While I have quite a bit of experience (years and years and years) of actually training, I’m very behind on the actual performance. I live in a very small town and have hardly done any really solo performing.
So my question: how much will this play into admission decisions? Like, hypothetically speaking, if my prescreen goes really well and everything sounds great and the rest of my application is good, how much will not having a lot of performance experience hurt me?
I ask this because I’m wondering if it would be worth it to take some time off before I apply and focus on getting more experience in that area.
Thank you! Also, if anyone wants to share any experiences about USC and the popular music major in particular, that would be awesome!
I don’t think your prescreens and audition will matter much more than your resume. Having an exceptional resume may help you but I honestly doubt that a lack of one will hurt you.
I meant to say “I THINK your prescreens and audition will matter much more than your resume” - not I don’t think…
Thank you, that’s what I thought but I wasn’t sure. I know some schools who do classical music (like Juilliard) won’t even consider students that don’t have extensive training and performing backgrounds, so I was wondering if it was the same thing. But from what I can tell you are right, prescreen and auditions look like they are the most important
