USC Reputation---how much is true?

Everyone has heard the University of Spoiled Children thing, but how true is it? I'm sure there is a good number of spoiled SoCal kids there, but honestly what is the student population like? Is it possible to have an active social life without joining a frat? I will probably be attending USC but I don't want to be stuck with a bunch of people I don't respect at all.

USC is very diverse. In terms of the spoiled children thing, it's definitely NOT true. There are people here from all walks of life, some are the kids of billionaires and others are from very poor areas that are receiving financial aid. And yes, it definitely is possible to have an active social life w/o being in a frat. I believe only 35% of the student population is involved with frats.

of course its true, they don't call it that for no reason

It is not true. They accept people from all states, all backgrounds. Check out USNews Rating website, lists USC in the top 10 nationwide for doctoral programs.

It is not true. I go to USC.

If you haven't spent more than a month living on-campus, then you shouldn't reply to the OP's question. Every 'SC student knows that the "Spoiled Children" acronym is one of many from the University of Civics and Lowered Acuras. ;)

Uh oh, here we go...and the University of Cadavers, Legs, and Arms.

Hi. Are there a fair number of indie kids on campus?

<a href="http://www.usc.edu/uscnews/stories/11925.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.usc.edu/uscnews/stories/11925.html</a></p>

Thanks for all the responses, I feel reassured.

Follow up question, what is the music scene like? Are there many music halls near campus, and are there many students interested in core groups?

i totally agree with what you say about USC being a diverse place. True there are some people who unforunately meet all the stereotypes and give SC its bad name, but there are truly down to earth kids who are there on scholarship, financial and also kids who are well off who are down to earth. There are people from all walks of life who attend USC and they all add their own different personality to the school, you'll see girls in UGG boots and miniskirts, frat boys who party, kids who want to save the world, students who want to study, em0/punk/indie kids who love the music, amazing and talented artists and musicians, anything you name it we've probably got someone like it.

its what you make of it…IMO

If it is always what you make out of it then go to the library and educate yourself independently with books and don't attend college. The environment of a college is not something you can just make.
