@drumminggeek87 How do you join the SCA group?
Anyone going to USC event on April 23rd or admitted student day at SCA on April 27th?
We’re only attending orientation in Jan. Didn’t know there was a separate admitted students day for SCA. If you attend, I’d love to hear your feedback! @filmmomvt
@filmmomvt Yes, my son (in SCA IMGD) will be going to the admitted students day on 4/27!
I already posted this on the main admissions thread, but here is something for you new SCA students to ponder and apply to later…
My daughter received notification today via email that she was awarded a place as a Fulbright UK Summer Institute Scholarship recipient. She will be attending the Film and Media program at the University of Birmingham in England this summer. It is a three week program, July to August. She is of course very excited. It is a great opportunity for her to expand on her current film studies at USC SCA.
Those planning to enroll at USC should at some point take a look at all of the info found here… https://ahf.usc.edu/
The Academic Honors and Fellowships Staff helps undergraduates… whether admitted with a merit scholarship or not… in terms of mapping out their undergraduate career with an eye towards either USC honors, scholarships and awards while an undergraduate or external scholarships, grants, fellowships and the like for the years beyond USC.
For example, in my daughter’s case (who was not an USC merit scholar), they had reached out to her back in November simply due to her current GPA about applying for the Fulbright UK Summer Institute Scholarship that she was just awarded ( http://www.fulbright.org.uk/going-to-the-uk/uk-summer-institutes ).
We are so thankful that they did so, or she would have never even heard of this great opportunity. It was the only one we found geared toward film and media… but there are likely other ones that are geared that way for graduate studies too.
Hello everyone! Anybody hear about the SCA scholarships yet? Somehow we received 0 financial aid - although we’re appealing - so really hoping our son will be able to get some scholarship money. And by the way, he will be attending the admitted student day on April 27. Hopefully it will all work out $!
We found out today that another USC SCA current student was a Fulbright UK Summer Institute Scholarship recipient for the Film and Media program at the University of Birmingham in England. They only awarded scholarships to 6 applicants overall, and 2 are from SCA. So congrats to him too Fight On!
Besides the uber prestigious distinction of being a Fulbright scholar, what specific benefit does the UK film and media studies program offer that isn’t attainable at SCA?
I’m asking as the parent of an admitted CAMS student who didn’t get into Production (like your D). So if there’s something that was particularly interesting to your D about the program, there’s a chance it may be interesting to other SCA.
I’ve researched other study abroad film programs (Hong Kong Baptist, FAMU, etc) - but don’t remember much about Univ of Birmingham’s FMS.
I google it now but would still appreciate your thoughts.
Found this article from last year about another SCA CAMS sophomore winning the same Fulbright scholarship. Sounds fun!

Well… to start with, my daughter is obsessed with British films and tv shows… plus British youtubers. She’s always talked about wanting to go there and maybe even work there in the U.K. someday. It’s basically a three week, fully-funded, intensive program with various modules that mainly offer the British perspective on film and tv. Past topics have included Film and Television Genre, Authorship, Audiences and Spectatorship, Performance, Audio-Visual Storytelling, Research for Film and TV and Filmmaking. And past field trips have included day trips to Oxford, Cambridge, Stratford Upon Avon and London… and also to places like the Warner Brothers Studio in Leavesden where all eight Harry Potter films were produced, Birmingham’s Electric Cinema - the oldest working cinema in the UK & the BBC Centre.
Clearly, a three week summer program cannot possibly impart to students all that may be attainable by studying abroad for a year or a semester, but my daughter also did not think that a normal study abroad program would be feasible - given all that she is trying to accomplish while at SCA. I am not aware of coursework at SCA that would even try to emulate the experience in total that students likely enjoy while there.
This is free (including the travel), occurs during the summer… and as you say - it is rather prestigious. Anything with the name Fulbright attached to it sounds great on a future resume. Plus they are a superb organization with a stellar reputation. I suspect that it will be a trip abroad to remember.
Yes… my daughter found the article that you referenced above early on and actually met with her to discuss it all once she was named a finalist. If my daughter ends up having 1/2 as much fun while there as the previous attendee did last summer, I will count her very fortunate.
So that’s two years in a row for CAMS gaining access to this program. The other SCA student who is also going this summer is a BFA in writing. I would recommend keeping it on your son’s radar as possibly something to apply for…
any transfer students hear back yet?
One admitted student I know has called today and now been told that scholarships will be out in the next few weeks, not until after students commit.
We were told during Tuesday’s Explore that the SCA scholarships would be out this week. They also said the reason scholarship decisions are late is because they lost their Dean of Admisdions at SCA.
@WWWard do you know if SCA classes are over for the semester? D wants to go to classes on Friday, plus meet students. Are your daughter’s 9around?
Classes end Friday for semester and a lot of big projects or final prep for finals is being done in classes the last couple days of this week. I can’t speak for @WWWard but it is a pretty high pressure time for a lot of students finishing things up over the next 48 hours. My D is not SCA, but is def in crunch time. So classes may not be their usual “fun” so just a heads up.
@filmmomvt If on campus, I am sure that you can roam around and see what may be accessible to check out or tour or sit in on. My daughter has no SCA classes on Thursday or Friday. And I believe that most are ending by tomorrow. As the above post suggests, current students are focused on finals and final papers right now…
FYI everyone waiting - S just notified he will receive an SCA scholarship. Whew! Somehow no FA so we were really hoping (needing) for this! Ecstatic!!!
