USC SCA Class of 2023 Discussion

Do you know how and when to apply to the SCA specific scholarships (George Lucas endowment, Hollywood Foreign Press, etc…)? On the website, it says: “The Office of Student Affairs will notify all students who submit a completed application for admission information about the SCA scholarship application process” but, I’ve not received anything about it.

I was just offered an SCA interview on Skype/Facetime within the next week. I applied for Film Production and am vErY nervous but I’ll see how it goes.

That’s great news @cposey !
Relax, be yourself, you’ll do well.

Congrats @cposey

Were you nominated for a scholarship or did you just receive an email out of the blue asking for an interview?

Thanks! Didn’t get a merit scholarship, I was just emailed by a professor asking to interview with Skype in the next few weeks to talk about my application. I had no idea these were even offered.

That’s really cool @cposey

Are you from the US or international?

As stated before… interview requests are generated by SCA faculty by those who deem them helpful. They are not offered to everyone, and in the past, they have been perceived as being designed possibly for those either “on the bubble” or for those where additional info may be required or sought after. It could also simply be the case that a faculty member is looking to champion your candidacy… which of course would be a great thing.

Historically, they have not really been a firm predictor one way or the other, but you should certainly look at it as yet another opportunity to shine. Many applicants have got in over time without even being offered an interview and many also do not get in after receiving one. Many are offered one, are interviewed and then do get in. It has been a set of mixed results in the past… mainly due to the ultra-competitive admission rates overall related to SCA. With admission rates for SCA so low… from 2-6% by most accounts recently, depending on the major being sought… most simply do not get in regardless.

But you should of course look at it as a positive and approach it that way. Interviews are just one extra tool for the decision-makers when they deem such important. I have been an observer of this process for the past five years, and I would like to tell you that getting or not getting an interview request is a strong indicator… but the results have been rather inconsistent. Since you were offered one… just do your best and put your best self forward in the process. That is all anyone can do. When my daughter was an applicant for SCA back in 2017, she was hoping for such a request, but it never came. Ultimately, she was admitted to USC but as Undeclared (so SCA passed on her)… and she then internally transferred into SCA while a freshman. In her case, she never gave up and got into SCA the second time.

But to me… your interview request is a positive. Approach it as such and shine.

Good luck…

@WWWard

Yeah I looked at some old posts and got that impression, thanks for the info. I do feel some of my work and awards could warrant explaining, so I’m guessing they’re on-the-fence about me. I hope it goes well but it does appear that this isn’t special treatment, just a small addition to my app (one that will hopefully push me over the line). Thanks for the good wishes, I hope it goes well!

@cposey you’re welcome. yes… sending good vibes your way…

yeah I got an interview last year and I’m now at USC for film!!! it’s really just a way for the interviewer to champion you and its usually all good. <33333 good luck

Looks like those who checked the box to show interest in SCA scholarships are now receiving emails stating the Fall 2019 app is open.

FYI - the link in the email to the app says 2018, but it’s for Fall 2019 (which you’ll see once you access the scholarship app).

Anyone else not able to access the scholarship application with their USC ID? I even called the admissions office to double check that I had the number right (I did) and it’s still not working.

@drumminggeek87 me too, tried every number I could find and can’t get in, hope they figure it out before the deadline passes ?

@cposey I know ? especially with the deadline as soon as it is

DS had same issue with USCID. Sent an email to studentservices at cinema.usc.edu and it was fixed in minutes

I’m also having the same issue with my USC ID; tried it three times and it kept saying it was invalid.

@cposey @Terabyte I emailed studentservices@cinema.usc.edu as @romns116 suggested and got this reply:

“A number of applicants have experienced issues logging in to complete the SCA Scholarship Application. Please note that our I.T. Department is currently working on it, and we will provide revised instructions by the end of the week. Due to this delay, the deadline has been extended to Friday, February 22nd. Thank you for your patience.”

Does anyone know if all interviews are offered at once? or do they send emails periodically when they need them?

@paceorama They are generated by the individual faculty member who may be seeking one and thus done so whenever such an individual decides to request it.
