***USC School of Cinematic Arts (Class of 2021 Discussion/Results)***

@loribale I believe that @CathJR is referring to USC SCA, not FSU MPA… as this is the SCA thread

And no, @CathJR not everyone gets an interview. Speculation in past years has been that it may be a potential tipping point for candidates on the bubble or that they need more info or clarification from. Many get in without ever getting an interview at USC SCA and many also get rejected without such an interview opportunity. Some interview requests have been made thru mid March before. It is all up to the USC SCA professor requesting the opportunity to get to know you better.

Good luck with the interview though…

@loribale I’m in Pennsylvania and this is the first email I have gotten, but maybe as @WWWard said you are confusing schools.

Also thank you WWW for your response! I’m guessing they probably need more clarification from me.

@CathJR You’re welcome. Yes… what loribale was describing is FSU MPA’s scenario.

Well, no one really knows for sure how SCA settles on those rejected or accepted, as again there does not seem to be a definitive pattern when it comes to who they choose to interview. But I would suspect that they likely have a question or two for you. Maybe they are curious about how you would have finished what you did not lol

Yes @CathJR & @WWWard sorry I thought I was on the FSU thread. Lol.

Hi all!

I’ve been following this thread on and off for a while so I just decided to go ahead and make an account! I’m a high school senior and I applied for Film Production at SCA for Fall 2017! I had an interview with a professor a few weeks ago and it went well! Of course, I’m not confident about acceptance (who can be haha), but I am definitely satisfied in that I presented myself the best I could have during this application process! So I’m hopeful. Good luck to everyone who applied! I’m crossing my fingers!

@iconiclife Hey, I’m on the exact same boat as you! I had an interview last week with a professor. While I’m definitely uncertain about my chances, being optimistic never hurts! Best of luck and I hope we both hear something good in March

ty and same to you! I’m counting down the weeks and it’s suuuchhh a long wait D:

The date being floated right now on the main admissions forum is March 23…if that’s true, 1 more month!

Just curious… for those SCA hopefuls this year, if that large golden envelope does not arrive in the mail via USC March 24th-26th, what are your potential fall-back schools for film… either ones already admitted to or ones that you are still awaiting their decision? In my daughter’s case, while SCA remains her top choice for film production, her current main “Plan B” options are UTexas RTF (admitted) and FSU MPA (final interview on Saturday).

Hey! My other 2 schools are LMU’s film and TV Production program and Chapman’s Film Production program! I’ve already been admitted to both so I have good options!

I was about to apply to UT but it pulled me back the fact that they don’t have a film application, since it feels like academics will get you into a film program and not talent, which I think it’s necessary. However my best friend is now a Junior at UT as an RTF major and she loved her classes, professors and internships. There are many available internships for RTF majors in downtown Austin! She is getting a lot of experience and has an internship in NY for this summer. The only downside is that UT is not really focused on film so being in such a big school you have to find everything by yourself without much help. But there are for sure many things to do to succeed as an RTF major! These are my 2 cents about UT! @WWWard

I had a feeling that Chapman and LMU (along with likely NYU) would be among the other strong contenders for film. My daughter chose not to apply to them, as she wanted more of an overall college experience too and was not sure that those colleges offered all that she was seeking. But there is no disputing their strong credentials for film. Along with USC, FSU and UT, the only other colleges in The Hollywood Reporters top-25 films schools that she applied to were Yale and Stanford. Of course, some of those rankings are also grad school centric.

Thanks, @bcnbound . Yes… it is strange to think that UT can be ranked so high for film (#11, THR) given their unusual approach to accepting those interested in RTF there (no creative submissions/portfolio required or even reviewed). But we have also heard that they have solid teaching practices and graduate quality film students. Plus, it seems to be a great college overall. And Austin is an amazing place to live and study.

@WWWard I applied to UCLA in addition, but I’m not so sure I’ll get into the film program. Otherwise, I’ve been accepted to my two state universities, Arizona State University and Northern Arizona University. I’m probably leaning toward the former, since I like being in a more city environment. Plus, there are tons of film festivals in-state, so it would be good to get involved with that, whereas California may be more competitive.

I think my plan is go for two years, then transfer to a California school to complete my Bachelor’s and try to get an internship. Dunno. We’ll see where the future leads me.

@Wynn22 Yes… it is truly amazing to think about the impact that a single month may have in store for many thousands of high school seniors. While some, the lucky few, may have already decided - based on a strong early admission, the vast majority are likely awaiting March decisions before deciding. My daughter, for example, still has 12 pending decisions… including her top choice - USC. Actually 12 and 1/2 decisions, as she is only into FSU and not yet MPA at FSU. We wish that USC had an EA/ED offering, but such was not the case. UCLA is also a great program for film. I know nothing about film programs in AZ, but ASU has a solid reputation overall. And of course, you still have the USC SCA decision looming. You never know…

Good Luck

@WWWard Thank you  AZ isn’t really about the film industry, but more nursing and engineering programs. Still, we all should start somewhere, and AZ is not that bad a starting point. I wish your daughter the best too!

You’re welcome @Wynn22 And thank you. Yes… every journey starts with a first step

I had my interview earlier today and it was a lot better than I thought it was going to. Still, as previous posters have said I know the chances are incredibly slim. @WWWard Some of the other schools I applied to were NYU and Syracuse. My safety was Elon and I was accepted EA.

@cathjr Congrats… at least that interview hurdle is now behind you. Nothing left but the decisions. Good luck managing the wait. Does NYU announce around the same time as USC? I am sure there are many who applied to both schools.

@WWWard Currently NYU says on their website that they are releasing decisions April 1 after 5pm, but apparently in past years they’re known to out of the blue release decisions one or two days earlier. So, it doesn’t seem like they will be around the same time according to the supposed March 23 is when the letters are mailed.

@WWWard So far, I’ve only heard back from Emerson which is my safe school (Although it’s pretty expensive as well so I’m not sure I’d be able to go at this point). The other schools I applied to were NYU, UCLA, Syracuse, BU, CalArts, Chapman (being considered for 2nd major as I didn’t get in my 1st). All are pretty competitive so all I can do is wait to see where the cards fall! USC is still my first choice though. Some of my family members are Trojan alumni and so I’ve been wanting to go to USC for so long! But I would love to go to any of the other schools I applied to as well. Congrats to your daughter on the FSU and UT acceptance!
