USC Style...for current USC girls

OK, this question will probably sound completely trivial and shallow, so I’m sorry if that’s the first impression I leave on you guys, haha. If you’re not into fashion or you’re not female, there’s really no point to read on. But anyways, here’s my question.

I’m obsessed with fashion. Literally obsessed. Through my many years of bargain hunting, thrift store sprees and some generous donations from my parents (haha) I’ve managed to accumulate quite the messy closet. So I was wondering about these questions for next year:

What would you say is the maximum amount of different clothing items you could bring, considering the amount of storage we have? (AKA, how many tops, sweatshirts, jeans, pants, skirts, shoes, coats, etc.) And are there any items you just don’t need in SoCal?

What do you girls wear for parties? Where I live everybody just bums it out and wears sweatshirts and cute jeans. I’m hoping it’s different there. What types of tops do you guys suggest for parties?

[Random question] Is it true that if you bunk your bed you get an extra dresser?

Do you guys have any storage solutions where you could maximize closet space?

Any cult items that only you USC or SoCal kids would know about?

Do you really even need a bathing suit freshman year?

Finally, as I know a lot of companies start in SoCal (True Religion, for example) are there any up and coming clothing companies that are really hot in SoCal right now that I should look into?

If you don’t go to USC but live near the area, or know the answers to any of the questions, feel free to answer as well. And you can always e-mail me at brittmarren@yahoo.com if you don’t want to post your answer for fear of sounding spoiled or shallow or whatever. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

dude.....emerica and o'neill and hurley are 3 brands that i saw a lot of people wearing when i went to huntington beach...which isn't anywhere near USC...ha

Don't worry, you sound like most other USC girls, so it's fine. :)

I have no idea of specific numbers of items of clothing to tell you to bring. I just brought everything that I wear, and left behind stuff that I don't use. I don't know where you're coming from, and how much space you'll have to bring all your clothes, but I say bring as much as you can. Definitely. As far as items you won't need. You definitely won't need any heavy coats, or any such clothes (unless you want to bring ski gear, or something). It doesn't get that cold or that rainy, so if you're going to skimp out on any type of clothing, winter clothes would work.

The style of clothing varies on the type of party you go to. Basically sweatshirts and jeans will only really work (of course you could wear them if you want, it's not that big of a deal) if you're going to a friend's kickback or something. If you're going to a club, you'll obviously need sparkly/revealing/fun/stylish clothes. For the Row it's like a club but toned down (well, for some :) ). You can get away with a lot at the Row, from really partyish clothes to more casual. For house parties you can dress more casual than the Row if you want, and it's totally fine. Like for the Row I like to wear heels, but I'm a lot more likely just to wear flip flops (I live in them) to house parties.

You're going to get one dresser, whether your bed is bunked or not.

I don't know any tips on saving space. I guess bunking your bed and bringing extra storage stuff or a dresser to put under would work.

Popular items at USC definitely vary all the time. There's always something new that everyone has. One trend that has been pretty longterm is everyone and their mother have Rainbows (the flip flops).

I would bring a swimsuit. You never know when you're going to go to the beach, or a pool, or whatever. And girls tan all the time outside in swimsuits, if you want to do that.

As I live also live in CA, near USC, I have to second what USChicka said-Rainbows are definitely in, and are actually really comfortable. Also, I would bring a few swimsuits- A comfortable one/one-piece if you want to work out in the pool, and a two piece for the beach/tanning/etc...
I know Abercrombie & Fitch and stores like that are pretty popular. I'm not exactly the trendiest person, so I only know what I observe with others.

What exactly are rainbows and can they be found on line...my d loves flip flops and she has a birthday coming up........I don't think they have hit the east coast just yet.....

Rainbows are made for both guys and girls. The main type that everyone has are a tan leather style, although some get them in black leather too. You can get them at rainbowsandals.com. The main type that people get are under the "leathers" section.

1.) Bring what you wear often that you would want to also wear often at USC. Remember that you are in the land of good malls, being in LA, and if you have a cool roommate or good sorority sisters, your wardrobe automatically doubles. You don't need any heavy coats.

2). For parties, I usually wear Seven's and a cute, flirty top. Seven's are pretty universal around SC, and as for the tops, you can buy those for cheap at Forever 21!!

3.) No. The beds come bunked, with one dresser underneath. Sorry.

4.)There are little cardboard dresser things that they sell at wal-mart or target that will fit under the beds. They are great for socks, undies, bras, and free up the room in the provided dresser for real clothes.

5.) I second the Rainbows thing, I live in mine, you can also get them at the book store. Other popular Socal things would be Seven's, C&C stuff, Juicy tracksuits, and UGG boots for the 5-6 chilly days we get in January.

6.) Yes. LA=beach=tanning=pool parties=bring your swimsuit!!!

7.) C&C is a halfway big deal right now....mainly thats just because their clothes are cut long but slender, and so many SC girls are tall and skinny. Other than that, there are sample sales in the Radisson all the time, and sororities host sample sales often too. (Basically, this rocks if you are a 4, 6, or 8!!!) That is where to find the best up and coming stuff.

Here are some questions:
1)What are sample sales??
2)Is Urban Outfitters popular at USC? That's my favorite store, my whole wardrobe is practically from there. If it is, where is the closest one nearby??
3)Then is there a nordstrom's rack or any other discount stores nearby, i know they sell Seven's and C&C.
4) Is the fashion district popular or convenient for shopping?

Popular things at SC based on observation: A&F, Urban Outfitters, Rainbows (although i think they are just trendy, i think Reef's are much more comfortable than rainbows), Seven, Diesel, guess, etc... I'm a guy and it seems like all the girls pretty much dress the same on the row or around campus. They wear about two different combos of clothes. Miniskirt or jeans combined with as said before flashy/cute/revealing top. I rarely see girls in polo's or button down shirts. Tank tops are deffiantely popular for girls. It seems like every girl at SC wears sevens along with their matching coach/DB/Juicy bags. And lastly, the big/stylish/fashionable (gucci/dior/chanell etc...) sunglasses i see on all the girls.

Urban outiftters is defffinately popular and i believe the closest one (at lease the one i go to cause i think it's closest) is on the 3rd st. promenade in Santa Monica. Also there is guess, diesel, A&F, american eagle, french connection, Armani, etc... Another place with tons of these same type stores is the Beverly Center and The Grove and Rodeo.

There is a nordstroms at the Grove, and at the beverly center they also sell sevens (not sure the department store name). However, i dont know if any of those are discount. If you want discount you could shop at melrose at the vintage stores, as they tend to have a lot of cool sh1t.

I don't know anyone who shops at the fashion district. I went around that area once because i thought it would be cool, and it literally seemed like i was in mexico or something.

Rainbow sandals go for 33 bucks, Seven jeans go for at least 150, designer bags are always expensive (duh), as are the Chanel sunglasses. UGGS, Juicy, Guess, Abecrombie-- these clothes/items are expensive.

Are you guys exaggerating when you say that like all USC girls are almost always in that expensive crap? I would think that at a school in which 60% of the kids are on fin. aid, they wouldn't all be buying Coach bags and UGGs for those "5-6" days in which it's rainy out in January.

By the way: I asked this same damn question on the USC LiveJournal only a week ago, and got some more casual responses: jeans/T-shirt/flip-flops. http://www.livejournal.com/community/usc/433607.html So perhaps the people answering here are part of a certain group that more often sport the sevens and the Chanel sunglasses-- sororities, maybe?

Again, I heavily doubt that all USC girls are running around in mini-skirts and UGGs.

Well, sure, definitely not everyone wears these things, but these are the fashions you are going to see. Of course people just wear jeans, t-shirts, and flip flops all the time, and some of the people will be wearing these items in designer. You will see a lot of these styles come up on tons of girls, PEALS, but not everyone are wearing them. It just seems like everyone is, because you notice when a lot of people are wearing them. And yes, a lot of these girls will be in sororities.

You will be totally fine in a t-shirt, jeans, and flip flops. And of course USC gear.

"Well, sure, definitely not everyone wears these things"

Right. Because I was thinking it would be impossible for everyone to wear those sorts of things because definitely not everyone can afford a Coach bag or a plethora of A&F skirts or C&C tanks, which are pretty unexceptional design-wise and are about 40 dollars each.

The thing is both clothing styles-- fancy jeans and cutesy/flirty tops with sandals, OR jeans, T-shirt and flip-flops-- are like foreign to me. Where I come from, people wear khakis, polos, Sperry topsiders. I don't think I even own more than one pair of jeans. I have lots of khakis, though. And lots of polos/button-down shirts. The designer bags aren't a problem, because as gifts over the past years my mother's given me several LV bags. Am I going to look weird at USC or something?

I really don't know, because I definitely think there's a difference between So Cal clothing brands/styles and ours. I would NEVER spend forty bucks for a C&C tank top or thirty bucks for Rainbows. For a polo, yes.

i'm pretty sure that you're going to see girls wearing that at every CA college, not just USC.

j/w where are you from peals?

PEALS - You won't look weird, but jeans and flipflops are definitely a must anywhere in California.

haha i am obsessed with LV. i'm positive you'll be fine.

i think what's considered 'trendy' at USC is also the same elsewhere. i live in the illinois suburbs and people here wear sevens, c&c, juicy, etc. too. so i wouldn't worry too much about what's USC-specific.

PEALS-
I'm from Texas originally, also work lots of khakis and stuff, and I am pretty sure that I did look weird for like the first six weeks or so I was here. Then my Cali roommates taught me how to dress.

Now, I wear Sevens and Rainbows pretty much religiously. That is just what most (and really, I am willing to say most) girls at USC wear everyday. I also wear the big sunglasses, but as I lose sunglasses as often as the Bruins lose at sports, I never pay more than $10 for them. I carry a Prada purse, and I have had it for three years, so that was a one time investment. For tops, I wear tank tops a lot, SC gear sometimes, and when I go out I usually wear a flirty top from Forever 21.

To the other poster, Urban is popular, just not my particular style. I'm not a big t-shirt fan, that's why. The closest one is actually on Melrose though, not SM like the other guy said.

And, may I restate: sample sales!!! Sample sales are when boutiques or clothing labels bring all of their samples (which only come in sizes 4-8 usually) to campus and then sell them for wholesale prices. These rock and are a great way to get the designer clothes without paying as much for them.

Someone asked about Nordstrom's Rack....the closest one is at the Howard Hughes Pavillion in Culver City, but it sucks. The best discount store for designer stuff is Loehmann's at the Beverly Center.

Again, not everyone at USC is rich, but almost everyone at USC is well dressed. I personally think one of the reasons we still get labeled the University of Spoiled Children is just because we all look like a million bucks ;-)

Hey Trojangirlie where in Texas are you from? I'm from SA but no one here wears a bunch of khakis or anything we just wear lot of jeans, skirts, flip flops and cute tops. I think its a weather thing though, becuase its wayyyyyy to hot here to wear heavier clothes espeically at this time of the year.

Dallas....

just walk around naked, don't even worry bout' clothes or style. I'm sure you'll be just fine.
