USC versus Cornell

Hey guys. I'd like to hear all of your opinions regarding where I should go to school.
I was accepted to Cornell's Hotel school as well as Marshall School of Business at USC. My dad is a professor in Marshall, so I would get free tuition which, in and of itself, is quite the incentive. I would graduate with no student loans, however, I would also not graduate with an Ivy League undergraduate degree. I currently live in LA, so I'm not terribly stoked on staying here and rather, would love to experience something new (I.E. the east coast). On the other hand, the girls are USC are farrrrr better looking, and I most likely have more fun at USC. But how can you pass up an Ivy League education? It's hard to turn down. I don't want to do something that I'm going to regret for the rest of my life.
Opinions... now. haha
wyattbridges is online now

personally, if my dad was working a college, no matter how great, i would probably choose a different one. And like you, i too would love to travel accross the country and attend USC as i currently live on the East Coast. But what you should keep in mind is where you personally want to go and block out the fact that Cornell is an Ivy. Titles are decieving.

cornell is in the middle of nowhere.
usc is in the middle of everywhere.
you'd be getting free tuition at USC and be paying at cornell.

answer seems obvious to me :)

Argument for USC.
-Cornell is much colder than USC.
-Sports are way better at USC
-Girls are way prettier at USC
-Its way more fun and exciting to live in Southern California
-And you don't have to pay tuition

Argument for Cornell
-It's an Ivy League School
-Your board with LA
-You get to graduate with lots of debt

I think it speaks for itself.

All kidding aside, congratulations on getting admitted to Cornell. Either choice will present you with a lot of opportunities in the future, you really can't miss choosing one over the other in my opinion. You need to find the school that is the best fit. Have you visited Cornell yet?

USC Marshall is more prestiguous than Cornell's Hotel program and it's free. The biggest problem I see is that your dad works there.

If you had CAS at Cornell, it would be Cornell all the way. But like it or not, fair or unfair, Hotel is an asterisk on your Ivy League degree. Better USC loud and proud than Cornell with an asterisk.

I'm having this same problem...elite Ivy or close-to-home USC?

Think of it this way. If you got into Cornell, you'll most likely get into Cornell for grad. You can always get your undergrad degree at SC and move out of state for grad school.

ok wait hotel program? Business program? it sounds to me like you have conflicted intersets here. Personally regardless of prestige or parentage I think you need to choose the school that will give you the degree that you actually want? lol.

The Hotel school at Cornell is DEFINITELY more prestigious than USC's business program. It is the best Hospitality school in the world. Cornell is a world renowned name, an ivy, and the hotel school is also a finance and management school, not just hospitality. And I'm pretty sure a Cornell degree is great with or without the asterisk. I dont even understand what you mean about the asterisk and why it is negative or less prestigious than a CAS degree.

Is the earning potential at a hotel management school worth the debt considering the alternative? I think it may depend what you want to end up doing and where you want to do it...if you want to work in LA, you'll get the connects with USC, even though you may have an Ivy league credential if the people youre working with don;t know much about the problem then it may not open as many doors and you'll still be stuck with the debt...getting into both schools is an accomplish obviously but it really all depend on what you want to do...if you are bored with Los Angeles my bet is that you'll get bored with Ithaca quicker as there is supposedly much less to do and weather will prevent you from doing things a large part of the year...I live in LA and had an alumni interview for Cornell, i mentioned that i want to go into media and he told me that maybe i should look at USC becasue of there strong alumni base and connection to the industry...if going to cornell only means you can say you go to an Ivy, theres probably no point, but if you like the program, the campus, and you truly want to go away then cornell could work

Why is everyone so quick to bash Cornell here? Say the costs were the same, which would you choose? Would everyone still choose USC?

This is a USC forum what do you expect

a FREE ivy league education
wow you are an idiot?
then again, you would be taught by your dad and everything you do studying under his peers will be under critical review? haha sry if i'm not helping but i just wanted you to consider the more serious factors rather than the hotness of women... if you're successful in life and are decent-looking, the hot women should flock towards you anyway...

to put it plainly (even tho i might be burned by stating so, ah well)
as a girl, i'd much prefer a hot cornellian man to a hot usc man
but i'd prefer a hot usc man (granted you're not a bum with no hopes and dreams past getting laid and partying in college) over a average cornellian man
... yeah.

edit//
and oh yes congrats!!

i applied to both, still waiting on Cornell, I lean toward SC because it is much better in terms of contacts/jobs/facilities then Cornell. As I said even my Cornell interviewer suggested I look at the SC program. I guess it would really depend would your preferences are but atleast in the west coast USC has a stronger alumni base, it's located closer to busines/cultural centers, it's basically sunny year round, its got a lot of school spirit. Cornell has benefits too, i guess there just not as obvious

I think it would be better to post this thread in a non-cornell or usc biased section of the forum. =P

^Seriously. I know USC is a good school and everything but I didn't even think it compared to what is offered at Cornell. And isn't the weather just as ridiculous as applying to a school based on what the students look like? I feel like someone could survive four years of winter and come out with an amazing degree and move to California later. I'm just surprised at how quick people are saying USC is the obviously better choice.

or post one in the USC section and one in the Cornell section

USC actually offers a lot as well, and it has greater resources because it's in a large urban area, it all depends on what you want to do though...if you want to study agriculture or hotel managment or maybe engineering then cornell could be more appealing, if like me you want to study media cornell doesnt really even come close.

no, cuz the weather affects you physically...
you could be sick much more often and miss curriculum
(if you're like like me and are prone to sickness)

i agree with that actually, i get a little sick every time the weather changes a bit, if its sunny year round i'll be sick a lot less, also i'll be able to go out and do stuff on a regular basis...there's more pollution inside then outside...i'm not saying weather is the main appeal for USC, but all other things being close or equal, why not consider it

yupp mross5. what's your USC status? it would be amazing for me weather-sickness wise!are you in? (i haven't heard yet, but prob not cuz i don't have that infamous "status change" and oasis link)
