USC vs Emory

Hey everyone I hope can get a little help in here

I don’t know what university should choose.

Major: Business
Cost of attendance is not a problem
I have double legacy at Emory so it would be like continuing with the family tradition

Please help me out with this. I would rather go to the best one regarding the academic aspect, best rankings, better name recognition, etc.

I know both have a great greek like and both cities are amazing so help me focus on the academic part

BTW I am a transfer applicant

Both universities have outstanding business schools and rankings are probably similar. It would come down not to which one is best, but which one is best for you. However, for name recognition, USC is a much larger university (three times as many undergrads) and plays big time sports, so it has the better name recognition.

USC also has a campus within an urban downtown LA area and Emory is 5 miles away from downtown and has a beautiful enclosed suburban campus. Emory is in the southeast and USC is on the west coast. In those two respects, along with size of the schools, they couldn’t be any more different.

Other things to consider are how easy it is at each school, as a transfer, to integrate. One last thing with Emory is that you would be transferring to Emory College and not Emory’s business school, Goizueta Business School. You would need to spend two semesters in Emory College before your admission to GBS. If you are a freshman now and being admitted as a sophomore, then it’s not a problem. However, if you are a sophomore, then you would still have three more years to graduate. If you have completed two years of college already, then that would be problematic.

@clan123, S applied to both and got into both, including USC with a merit award. We visited both USC and Emory and toured both business schools. I have been connected with USC for forty plus years but have lived in Atlanta for 20 so I know both schools and cities well. Full disclosure, S will not likely attend either one.

Gozuieta business school is ranked higher than Marshall business school and will likely provide a more rigorous education in business for you than USC. I am assuming you are referring to the Marshall Business school in Southern Cal. Also, you will have significantly smaller class size at Emory. The Atlanta economy is booming and Emory sets you up for internships and a great job in a city which is still affordable for young people, unlike Los Angeles. Emory is likely less expensive than USC as well. The major missing thing at Emory that USC has is school spirit and football. Even if that may be important to you, I don’t think it should be a reason to choose a university whose primary objective is to provide the best education. Weather is better in Los Angeles too. I’ll take dry over humid, but no earthquakes in Georgia is a plus! Both are urban locations and would be careful after dark in both neighborhoods. USC provides excellent security for their students surrounding the campus.

Emory business school will also have better national branding than USC, despite what many Trojans would like you to believe. USC carries an advantage if you plan to stay and work in Southern California. The Trojan Alumni network is best in CA and has good connections in Asia as well.

Yes, you cannot start in business as a freshman at Emory but if you maintain decent grades, we were told it is easy to transfer to Gozuieta business school. Not sure if you transfer from another university, whether you can start right away at Gozuieta as a Sophomore. As universities, both are T 25 schools but the undergraduate reputation of Gozuieta is better than Marshall at USC. That being said, the student body at Emory seems pretty serious and the social life may be a little lacking as compared to USC. USC may be more fun overall, but you may have the last laugh with a business degree from Gozuieta Business school, when it’s time to interview for jobs. You will likely have a more balanced socioeconomic student body at Emory than USC which has many more wealthy students in attendance. Both are solid choices, so you can’t go wrong with either one.

I wouldn’t disagree that Emory/Goizueta is a better school. However, the rankings are very close and that and/or prestige is driving this transfer applicant.

This one actually has Marshall slightly above Goizueta. However, US News’ rankings leave much to be desired with such poor rankings for Bentley, Northeastern, and Georgia Tech. Poets & Quants does a much deeper evaluation, but USC didn’t even participate in that (mistake for any business school not to work with P&Q).

Double legacy is a poor reason to choose a school. OP indicates he is an international student, which Emory does well with, but as you say, USC might have an edge in Asia.

From Emory, it is easy to gain admission to its business school. However, incoming freshmen have to wait until spring if their sophomore year (depending on credits accumulated - APs help here) or spring of their junior year and transfers still have to spend two semesters at Emory College before admission to the GBS.

It’s also nice to cut your own path. either would work well for you.

I don’t see Marshall Business and Gozuieta at Emory being equivalent. Was more impressed with Kelley Business school, curriculum and resources than Marshall. Would only consider Marshall if the plan is to stay in Southern Cal after graduation. Marshall gets a lot of transfer students sophomore year who are not the most serious students. Agree that USNWR is a flawed ranking.
