Im from South East Asian country and just got accepted to both of those awesome universities USC and Notre Dame. Im in a big dilemma in choosing one of them right now. I have never been to America and heard that USC got a lot of Asians and is warmer so I might have an easier time adjusting to the environment. However, my parents want me to go to Notre Dame. I intend to study business in university. So can you guys help me out by pointing out the pros and cons of both universities. Thanks guys.

They are both excellent schools.

My kids have preferred schools in larger cities and my daughter has loved the weather at USC.

USC has major connections to Asian countries along the Pacific Rim, particularly in the business area. There are scores of business undergrads from Hong Kong every year, and more coming from many countries in the area. USC has made a big push to improve their relations with Asian businesses and leaders. You would be in a great position to take advantage of these connections within the school because of where you come from.

What are the reasons your parents want you to go to Notre Dame? If the reason is “I hear USC is dangerous” then tell them it’s simply not true. USC is a campus in the middle of a city, and of course there is going to be crime. The campus security force is very good, and I have never felt unsafe around the USC area, even late at night. If they say that USC is a big party school, well tell them that USC did have a reputation for that… 30 years ago. Since then, academic achievement has risen dramatically, admission has gotten much more difficult, and USC is looked upon as an example of how to revitalize and improve a university.

Plus the weather’s nice, LA is a vibrant and diverse city, and there are tons of sights to see and things to do in Southern California. Who would want to go to boring, soggy, cold and dreary South Bend compared to that?

ND’s business school is great. But Marshall School is also…and recently ranked #10 by Bloomberg/Businessweek. ND’s a Catholic school, so that could be a consideration. Both are well known. ND leans a bit “east” in culture…that is eastern united states. Of course USC leans west…in US culture, and has the pacific rim connections. Good problem to have. But i’d go with USC.

Both are excellent schools. I would suggest also posting this in the Notre Dame forum, to get those suggestions, too.

Good luck.

Its not as widely known but Notre Dame is also in a bad neighborhood, my brother’s friend just got pistol whipped a month ago walking back to his dorm late at night
