USConnect question/speculation?

Had anyone tried to register for housing with your USC ID?

@Bouncer why would we do that if we haven’t been accepted?

Go to the housing page and try to login with your USC ID. I haven’t tried it yet but wanted to know if applicant IDs work or not.

it won’t work because we haven’t received our decisions yet

it was a good idea though

^ Housing is separate and students in the past have been able to register for housing without being accepted into USC. Thus, just because you can do it, doesn’t mean anything. And, if you register before being accepted, your application may be thrown out (as it has for previous people who have tried this in the past-- you can search old threads from previous years where this happened).

Can you refer me to some threads of this happening? I haven’t registered yet and don’t want to if this if true.

Your housing application may be thrown out. Tried to edit, but it had been too long.

And no, I’m not spending my time searching through old threads :)

Ditto camomof3. Students often try to find a way into or around a system. And most colleges are getting wise to it.

Last year USC was very clear. The housing system is separate from admissions. Only after they start making assignments will they cross check their own list with the USC acceptance list. I too seem to remember that USC frowned heavily on students trying to book housing before they were admitted. I don’t know why a student would risk it.

As a result, we waited until after the admissions packet arrived to place a deposit.

I have a theory. Maybe, just maybe, people who have their first / second choice major on their Fin Aid page have been awarded some sort of merit scholarship or financial aid? That would explain it. For people who don’t, it could just mean that they’ve been possibly accepted but without any aid. I hope this is the case because USC is one of my top choices, and my Fin Aid page suggested that I might have been rejected (unknown, unknown) before it was taken down.

It can’t be bad news for those of you that had majors listed in the FA before they took it down. But it might not be bad news for the unknown, unknown either because data entry is not instantaneous since does take some time to complete. Perhaps USC had not gotten to our names yet? What would be interesting to know is if they were entering the data by the various schools at the university? Since we are all just sitting here dying for time to fly by more quickly, maybe some of you that had your major listed, could post your major/school…

Our S put his housing app in in mid to late April, after he was SURE he was attending USC. He still got his 1st choice in housing and most who didn’t get their 1st choice got their 2nd or at least 3rd. Unless you want somewhere that is extremely popular, I’d recommend saving your money and waiting until you’re SURE you’ll be attending USC and whether you want a random room mate or someone specific you know IRL or virtually that you specify.

Umm… Admissions said it has no relevance to admissions! It was just a bug in their system, doesn’t mean anything

@Calculusfan
Admissions isn’t about to admit their mistake, especially on social media. They also told us that the status changes before scholarship finalists came out didn’t mean anything…

@calculusfan - have you ever heard the term ‘spin control’? Basically - it could be irrelevant - we’ll probably never know for sure, but what else are they going to say? They never said there was a ‘bug’ in their system or a ‘glitch’. It may have updated too early or they didn’t realize the consequences of doing partial updates, but there is no way they would ever admit that it was indicator of admission. Why anyone would call or tweet them and bring it to their attention is beyond me.

OK, since we’re speculating, I’d like to know:

 • Did anyone who had a major posted apply to Viterbi?
 • Where are the folks who had a major posted? CA, out-of-state (if so where), international?
 • Does anyone who had a major posted have a complicated FA situation (self-employment, etc.)? I know some didn’t apply for FA, and some did.

While we wait, I can’t help wondering if the “glitch” was a total update (in which case “unknown/unknown” would be bad news) or a partial update (in which case it might not be). I personally think that having had a major posted is almost certainly a harbinger of good news, but we really don’t know about the others, since updates and uploads can be partial.

My hunch is that it either means nothing (a weird glitch), a partial update, or an update for people receiving scholarships.

I also don’t think they’d flat out lie to all applicants. If it meant something, I personally would have ignored the tweet, if I was an admissions officer.

My D applied for a BA in Theatre and that is what FA posted online until they took it down yesterday. She was also invited to the School of Dramatic Arts Open House next weekend, which in past years has indicated the an acceptance is pending. I would thus speculate that FA posting that info was a good sign. But as FA has also not completed all FA packets yet, it may not be definitive if nothing appeared there yet… before they corrected the glitch. The good news of course though is that we will all know for sure in less than 4 days. Good Luck…
