USD vs ASU Barrett vs Creighton

Hi guys, so I know this is kind of last minute but I'm trying to make my final college decision and it basically isn't happening. My choices are University of San Diego, Arizona State University (Barrett the Honors College), and Creighton University. I am looking to study undergraduate pre-medicine with the hopes of becoming a pediatrician in the future.

University of San Diego is my personal top choice. I loved the campus, I've already met some of the people from the Facebook group, and I love the location. Plus I would maybe get to intern at the San Diego zoo eventually. (I'm majoring in biology.) Unfortunately it is also the most expensive...I got a good merit scholarship but it's still not enough. And my parents think it's not worth the money because it's not a "name" school, even though I intend on staying on the west coast post-college.

Barrett, The Honors College at ASU is pretty nice, but ASU itself it absolutely huge and I've heard that it's hard to even get the classes you want because there's so many students. It's also uncomfortably close to home, but being an in-state student, I get my tuition waived, so it's definitely the cheapest option.

Creighton University has a good medical reputation, and my parents think it's the best fit for me. It's in Omaha, Nebraska...and I didn't LOVE it when I visited, but I didn't hate it. I got a better scholarship at Creighton than I did at USD but still not as much as ASU, so it's the 2nd cheapest. I don't really want to go there and the only reason I looked at it in the first place was to make my parents happy. Looking into it further, I realize they're right and it is a good school, but I still don't like the feel of it and I think I'd be a lot happier in the Southwest.

The hardest part of this is really deciding what is best for my career, and what is best for me. I would go to University of San Diego in a heartbeat if my parents approved....I just love everything about it. Another thing I'm considering is going to ASU Barrett for a year and then transferring out to a California school. I recognize that Creighton is a great school but it just doesn't feel like the place for me at all....I can't picture myself happy there. I just don't know whether to follow my heart or follow my parents' advice (unfortunately they get a lot of say in it because they're paying for it.)

Should I try to convince them to let me go to USD? Or should I go in state like everybody else? Or should I go out of my comfort zone and go to Creighton?

I can’t say which school is best for you… I can tell you my son attends Barrett at ASU. So far, he has had no problem getting the classes he wanted despite the size of the school. Barrett students get to register pretty early so that may be why.

My son just decided on his in-state flagship’s Honors program over Barrett - even with free tuition in-state, it was a very tough choice. We loved Barrett, loved the people, loved the campus, had a magical visit there. I’m sure he’d choose Barrett if given your choice.

Thanks for the input. I think I’ll end up going to Barrett for at least a year. If I love it, I’ll stay. If it ends up being too close to home I might look into doing transfer applications elsewhere. I did my research and toured though and I’m getting kind of excited! Thank you!
