USD vs. ASU

My D was accepted into USD with the $60,000 scholarship and another USD scholarship, grants and work study option. She also was invited into the Honors program. She is trying to decide between ASU Barrett Honors College and USD. She has a full tuition scholarship for Barrett. We live a half an hour away from ASU, but she would live on campus. USD is 6 hours away from where we live in AZ. Any suggestions?? She was also accepted to some very good east coast colleges(Villanova and Lehigh) with excellent scholarhships,
as well as UCSD and UCSB.

My D was in the exact same position last year. It is difficult to give up Barretts and sometimes we do look at the money difference, even with her USD scholarship it is considerable. She does love knowing her professors and having small intimate classes. She knows she would have hated being a number in a huge lecture hall. She also has had opportunities to get involved in student government at USD because it is a smaller school . She also loves San Diego and was very ready to have a break from Arizona. She gets to the beach a lot to study, read, tan. But there is no right answer. Did your D spend a night on campus? That should help a lot. My D decided at the wire last year. We have friends at Barretts who went there for the scholarship and gave up schools like Duke, Amherst, Stanford. They have gotten into great grad schools and had a lot less pressure on them then their peers . The realitly is both are good choices, depends on your D's learning style. PM me if you have specific questions. Good luck, we have been there!

Well my D and I attended the "sunday in san diego" last Sunday, and then on Monday went back to visit the campus and eat lunch. She decided she really likes it and even though it will be more expensive than ASU she thinks it will be worth it. Any opinions are welcome. She still has a few doubts about some academics, not having a car there, leaving a boyfriend here and being far away from home. And I must say I wonder too are we making the right decision. ASU is closer, and less expensive.

Congratulations on the decision. I am of the belief that the college years are a good time to try something unfamiliar. Way back in the dark ages my mother told me to 'Try it. If you don't like it, come home. But at least you won't spend your life wondering...'
It is also much easier to, mentally, to transfer out of the more expensive place, rather than transferring IN to the more expensive place ;)
