USF Scholarships?

Okay, back to reason I came back to this thread: financials

So I was really bored a couple nights ago and made a spreadsheet with all the estimates I received from USF and inferred my own that show the cost of attendance at USF for me. http://i.imgur.com/tH03K.png</a> (btw, the colors are USFs EXACT school colors, in accordance to their department of marketing and communications  )

Note that I HELLA want to be an RA no matter what school I go to, so that cuts down about 18k a year if I’m able to snag it (hell, I’m practically training myself to fit the characteristics of an RA).

Also note AETNA under the Living section. That’s a low-cost medical insurance service that is offered by USF because they need you to have medical insurance and being attached to my mom’s plan is more costly.

I’m on a pretty similar financial boat as turtlerock. I have an EFC of 3k according to fafsa4caster (needa get around to doing the real one sometime this month :\ ), so I’m hoping the need-based grant is somewhere around that.

Any corrections you guys feel I should make?

Ahem, hope that we can all meet up as students at USF someday! maybe get some thai food. always down for that.

Wow everybody’s so organized I feel completely unprepared :frowning:

Since we sort of began talking about campus visits, I was wondering if I should go there by myself to look around or actually sign up for a session online. I heard from some people that going by myself has perks, but… I have no idea. Thank you guys so much for sharing your experiences though! I’m really really excited to go visit soon; I really want to attend USF and I haven’t even visited yet LOL

Stimulations, how were you able to sit in one of the classes? :o did you sign up during their campus preview day? Because I was unfortunately busy that day so I didn’t have the chance to go :(

And also back to finances, Stimulations you are way too organized LOLOL. I need to start doing my actual FAFSA soon too - and pray for a good financial aid package or else there’s no way I can attend. Maybe I should stop being lazy and calculate mine on fafsa4caster too ._.

You can try both, but the tour given during the Admitted Students Visit event is failr encompassing of everything there is to see.

There’s two ways to sit in on a class that I know of:
a) Go to any 1 class on a given list during the Admitted Students Day (USF invites all admitted students, not articulated students, to campus a little later and part of the event is to sit in a class with other admitted students while a USF faculty member covers some more interesting stuff). See my review from last year here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-san-francisco/1287556-usf-admitted-student-visit-2012-a.html</a></p>

b) Also once admitted, and a little after the Admitted Students Visit, USF invites admitted students to sign up online (via email) for their Shadow Program, where the admitted student “shadows” a current student and attends one of that USF student’s classes for the specific day signed up. I thought this was a really neat program, and many other colleges have the same type of thing. Basically, I got there first thing in the morning, ate breakfast in the cafeteria, then met my student “ambassador” I was to shadow that day. He took me around campus for a few minutes and then to his class. I happened to pick a Philosophy class - Philosophy of War and Peace or something like that (the list of available classes to shadow is HUGE if I remember right; there’s a variety of a whole lot of different things). I introduced myself to the class per the professor’s request (though not all professors would do this) and sat through a fairly interesting discussion that, of course, I could also take part in. Then I split from my “ambassador” and was treated to lunch back at the cafeteria by the admissions staff and ate and spoke with other students there that day on the Shadow Program. I also got a parking ticket that day for parking in the school parking garage without a permit (as opposed to the visitor parking), which was a doozy. I got it cancelled though, after obvious reasons (4-speed manual car will not make it up the Lone Mountain ramp to visitor parking, who the heck does USF think they’re kidding). I can tell you exactly where Office of Campus Safety is because of that, and which form to grab to contest a campus parking ticket. ;)

So if you’ve been admitted, then you should be invited soon to the Admitted Students Visit (I went in Feb last year), and I highly recommend going. I think they have another one in March too. And keep your eyes peeled in your email for details on the Shadow Program if they are doing it this year (or email admissions office and I’m sure they can fill you in), which I also highly recommend doing.

Oh, sorry, I was at camp all week ^_^.

It was actually a lot easier to sit in a class than as turtlerock described. Just look through their dynamic schedule ( https://artemis.usfca.edu/prod/bwckschd.p_disp_dyn_sched</a> ), find a class that you’re interested in at a time you can attend, and email the professor teaching that section saying that you’re prospective/admitted USF student and that you’d like to experience USF through a perspective in their class. I asked two professors, one of a large general biology class and one of a small upper division comms class, and both said yes, so there’s nothing to be too afraid about.

But yeah. you should definitely visit USF. On one hand, it fits the description/stereotype of what to expect from USF and a school in SF, but at the same time it’s a completely independent entity to the factors around it, making it stand alone and very unique.

Well whadda ya know, that’s an easy way. Yeah do this.

Wow that link o_o
I’ll see when USF is planning their admitted students thing, but I’d also like to have the chance to join a class on a regular day where honestly they’re not like super prepared that a bunch of potential students are coming or something just so I can see how the classes are really like.
Thanks so much for the information!

yeah, I was a little starstruck when I first saw the class choices, too. Spend some time looking at some fun stuff, especially their first-year seminars.

Hey, we should meet up at Admitted Students Day!

And oh gheeze, cars+USF=not the bidness, turtlerock. i feel ya.

Yeah, let’s meet up at Admitted Students Day so I’ll have a roaming buddy who actually knows where to go  There hasn’t been any news about the one this year yet, right?

Sorry for double posting, but Stimulations  I just got a small note in the mail today saying the admitted students day will be on February 16 and April 6. I’ll probably attend the one in February!

Aw man. I’m getting my wisdom teeth out the 15th, so I’d look too chipmunked to go. But I’d really prefer to go to the February date rather than wait all the way til April (which would be after when I receive the FA packet, so by then my decision would have been made), so I’m definitely giong to see if I can reschedule my appointment! I’ll keep you updated!:)

But wow, that’s a great coincidence in timing!:)

It’s okay, Stimulations. Whelp, I just got a bad haircut today so hopefully it’ll grow out by then. LOL. Try to reschedule because I’d love to meet up with you there! And yeah, that’s what I was thinking too, but I might have to go in April again just because my mom wants to go with me and she’s busy on the February date, so… =_=

I haven’t received any info on it from the mail yet, does it give a time frame of when the event is? Because you should schedule a non-admitted day sit in before and after the event, since you’re already on campus:) I know I probably will.

I’m so sorry Stimulations; I didn’t see this until now! :frowning: Did you receive any information yet? I don’t even know where I put the postcard haha it’s after finals and I’m exhausted and disorganized. I’ll probably do the same. I’m still having a hard time deciding between USF and another university, so I really want to make the best of my time there and see as much as I can before making a final decision (that, and to wait for the financial aid package). Any (good) news about whether you’ll be attending the event? :D
