Using only ACT for Admission

Has anyone used the ACT only for admission? My D has done far better on her ACT than her SAT and I would like to use only ACT to apply.

Just need to know.

I’m going to try that in the fall when I apply for colleges. I know that colleges accept either the ACT or SAT.

just to let you know, colleges like a high SAT score better than that of the ACT

My niece was admitted to Stanford using only ACT scores.

My daughter attends Cornell and only submitted ACT scores (and SAT 2s).

^ I have a question for you. Did she take the SAT 1 at all? Because I took the SAT 1 and ACT but I just want to send my ACT without sending my SAT 1. The problem is I also want to send subject test scores I received so I was wondering if there were a way to do this

She took the subject tests and sent those scores before taking the SAT 1. Her ACT score was significantly better than her SAT 1, so she sent only her ACT scores.

ACT only scores worked fine for my d at highly selective colleges. She asked colleges and all said either SAT or ACT and there was no bias. Good luck.

yeah i plan on using ACT only (mostly because im way too burnt out on testing to learn a whole new ballgame).

then again, im not shooting for ivies.

also, one proud korean is wrong, the majority of colleges regard them equally. he probably just heard that SAT is better from someone, or he talked to an adcom from one specific school, which obviously doesn’t represent all colleges.

Thanks to all of you for your answers. My daughter’s ACT (27) is significantly better than the SAT, specially in Reading. She took the ACT without studying. I am gong to have her study for the June ACT. Based on comments made her on CC, I am hopeful she will improve up to 29 or 30 which will be enough for the schools she is looking at.

I would really like to have her only send the ACT’s. I can see from your responses that the SAT IIs are important to add on if you are only sending in the ACT.

Most schools will NOT require SAT II’s in addition to the ACTw/writing. Mainly just the super elites require both and, even amongst some of those schools, Yale, Brown, Penn, and certain colleges at Cornell, the ACTw/writing is sufficient. The reason given to us by one admissions office is that the ACTw/writing is a 5 part exam while the SAT I w/writing is only 3 parts. Of course, it’s best to check the particular requirements of each school on your D’s list.

My D is a hardworking B plus student. Her GPA is 3.78 weighted. Her first ACT is a 27. We are not applying to any schools that require SAT IIs. However, I was just wondering if we apply with just the ACT will it bolster her application to have 2 SAT IIs. She can take her Chem Sat II in June (since she has just finished AP Chem) and then one other, maybe U.S. History. However, I don’t want to put her through the testing if it isn’t necessary. She is taking ACT on June 13 and I need her to study for that and have a fresh attitude.

After working hard for 3 years with some minor learning disabilities, she is burning out.

^^I hear you as my D felt the same way last year as a junior…college admissions exams, state mandated exams, AP exams…totally burned out so refused to prepare for the SAT II’s…lol. Between my two kids, both only took the ACTw/writing (practically the norm here in the Midwest) and it did not compromise their admissions results. S is a junior at Kalamazoo College and D will be a freshman this fall at Penn/Wharton.

Thanks GoBlueAlumMom.
I am still trying to figure out what to do. The SAT II deadline for June is coming up.

Anyone else have an opinion or experience?

What does your D want to do?

Well I am thinking of using my ACT only. It is a 32…Junior year (36 Reading/34 Math…science wasn’t has high, but percentile wise it was). I would like a top school, debating on Subject II tests. Don’t feel like taking any more tests but may retry ACT in fall.
GPA 4.5, top 5% class (over 800+student), sports primarily and some clubs.

bplusmom - I think I would encourage her to focus on prep for the ACT; she has a good score already, but is likely to improve the 2nd time if she does some work. A higher ACT score could open up some possibilities for merit aid at many colleges, since she has a high enough GPA. In terms of prep, my D was so surprised about the English section - she hasn’t really focused before on usage and punctuation (Microsoft Word does that for her, right?). Turns out that was a very easy section to study for; she just had to be reminded of the rules. She also prepped by reviewing some math stuff she’d forgotten, and prepped for science by taking a bunch of practice tests to master the time problem. She improved her composite score by 3 points. She will use this, and not her SAT reasoning score.

Regarding the SAT subject tests, there really are very few colleges that require them. Some people will submit them if they feel their ACT has a section that is weak; for example, if she scores lowest on science, a good score on the SAT in chemistry could help show adcoms that she does well in science. Or if there’s a subject where her grades are weaker, that is another area where a SAT subject test can help. One thing she could do is just take the SAT subject tests without doing serious prep - just rely on having recently taken her exams at school. Worst case is you don’t like the scores and don’t send them. Best case is you have something to add to the application. With score choice, you don’t have to submit the SAT reasoning test, unless she’s applying to a college that has rejected score choice (Stanford, Yale, Pomona, e.g.)

My D is sick of testing. She does not like the SAT and is far more comfortable with the ACT. So I think we will stick with that. Now I am trying to figure out the SAT II situation and whether she should take them. She is finishing up two years of Chemistry, Honors and AP, so it only makes sense that she take that test in June. I am in a quandary about what other Subject test she should take. Maybe she should wait until the October test date and study this summer for another SAT II test?

Thanks Fauxmom.

We are not trying for the upper tier schools. She does have auditory processing disorder and I don’t want her to be intimidated. I know this website has some very high achievers. My D works very hard for her grades. Nothing comes easily. So I don’t want her to be in a school where she feels that she is always trying to keep up.

Thanks for all of your help. I think we will just stay with the ACT. She is taking her second SAT reasoning test today. I will have to see the scores. Unless she comes up significantly, we will stick with the ACT. Far less agony.

S got into Notre Dame, USC, UC Berkeley, and UCLA with ACT only. He did need the SAT subject tests for UC though.

On the subject tests from my kids:the Math II and Lit are not too bad, US History starts with the pilgrims so if you’ve had AP you’re good and the Chem is tough.
