Using Only ACTs for Acceptance

Has anyone used only their ACT scores on applications? If so, did you get into the colleges that you wanted? Did any colleges contact you for SAT's?

It looks like my D is scoring far better on her ACTs than her SATs. I have had some advice for her to study for and pursue only the ACTs. Has anyone else done this? What was your outcome?

Thanks for the help

It is common for many schools in the midwest to accept only ACT scores. I actually stumbled across one of the state flagships yesterday that specified that it prefers ACT over SAT. As I understand it, there are almost no schools that now require SAT I over ACT. However, some require SAT II exams.

I only have our own experience.

Son only used his SAT scores for those schools requiring SAT II’s. While next year you can pick and choose what set of scores to submit under score choice, a lot of schools are opting out of that option.

Son applied to Colgate, Middlebury, Tufts, Hamilton and Trinity using only his ACT’s. Got into every single one. Used SAT II’s to apply to GTown and Johns Hopkins (and Dartmouth ED) - unceremoniously rejected from every single one. Cant remember if Amherst required SAT II’s or not… Waitlist (but didn’t accept a spot).

Thanks for your input. This is very good news. I am thinking that we are only going to concentrate on the ACT’s. My daughter has a 3.78 but has a hard time testing. We just heard about her scores from her first ACTs. Without any studying she had a composite 27, M 28, e 28, Sc 25, R 26 and E/W 28. I am very hopeful she will improve once she studies. Her SAT scores were not that great (low 600 and a low 500).

So I am thinking that the ACT may be her test.

She is finishing junior year and I am just getting my feet wet with the whole college search.

Thanks for the help.

Nearly every college will accept the ACT in lieu of the SAT. Just make sure she takes the Writing, just in case she adds a college later that requires it.

btw: A 27 converts into an SAT of ~1220, so perhaps your D’s scores are similar.

Son only took the ACT. Did well (didn’t study) and didn’t bother to take them over to take the SAT’s at all. We live in NY which is SAT land. No problem though.

Applied to 15 schools and got accepted to all. No one asked for SAT scores not that we could send them if they did.

I took the SAT but only sent the ACT to the college I applied to. Though that is in the midwest…

Thanks everyone for your input. I feel better and better about this with every message I read.

Did you apply to east coast schools? Where your son’s ACT’s above 26?

Younger son submitted ACT plus SAT II’s. We come from SAT part of the country, but he did so well on the ACT he never took the SAT I. He was accepted ED at Northwestern. We were told by senior admissions staff in legacy interviews at three highly selective schools on the east coast that there was no need for him to take the SAT I.

(You should take the ACT plus writing version of the test).

I’m planning on only using my ACTs
i didn’t even bother with SATs

Sent in only ACT and was accepted to WUSTL, Vanderbilt, U of Mich, PSU-Schreyers, UW-Honors, Lehigh-IBE, U of Rochester ($$$ merit), McGill, UBC and will be attending Cornell in environmental engineering.

Took SAT IIs and did okay, not great, but was accepted with the ACT & 2 SAT IIs to Engineering at UC-Berkeley and UC-Davis (OOS). Did not send SAT II scores anywhere else and did not take the SAT I.

If you are better at the ACT, go for it.

Son applied to east coast schools in NY, RI, NH, PA, Va, publics and privates. Applied in OH too.

ACT was 31 (but with a very poor writing of 6.) HE had 1 SAT subject test which he did great on so that was sent.

The schools know the approximate conversion so there was no problem using only ACT.

Most of the schools he applied to were matches and safties (engineering major so I didn’t want a reach school for him.) Applied to a few reach though.

Older son took ACT and SAT’s and SAT subject tests. Did great on ACT (34) but had already taken the SAT’s so they had to be sent since the schools he was applying to required the SAT subject tests and they were sent together.

Friends son go into Mary Washington in Va with a 25 ACT.

If you need merit $ (we don’t get need based aid) apply to schools where your sons ACT’s or SAT’s fit the top 25 percentile. This is especially true for private schools.

PM me if you have any questions as I may not find this thread again.

My younger so took the ACT and was told to try his hardest and if he did well he would never, ever have to take an SAT class or take either test again. I think that motivated him. I gave him hints I knew for the ACT which are to work quickly, read the questions first and then find the answers in the question or passage or science charts as there is much useless info in them. This strategy seemed to work. He had the option to take it again (and study!!!) but we know with his GPA (3.82) the ACT grades were very good.

Your daughter’s composite of 27 is really great.

Thank you Crazed. Now I feel guilty for making her take the SAT today.

Yup, like some other posters, I sent in only my ACT scores to colleges, and I got into every single college (except for Stanford, ;D) - I applied mainly to California schools (i.e. USC, UCLA, and some other UCs) but I also applied to schools on the east coast in PA, NY, and MA. And no one asked for my SAT scores. The ACT and SAT are now widely accepted by most colleges, so there’s no reason to sweat. And maybe she’ll do well on her SATs, so don’t feel guilty! It’s good to have an SAT score in your pocket just in case there is a college that won’t accept the ACT.

ALL colleges accept either the ACT or the SAT. The last college (it was on the West Coast but I don’t remember which) added the ACT about 2-3 years ago.

My daughter scored almost exactly as yours! She has decided to just focus on the ACT. We are going to get some private tutoring in Math and Science (her weaker subjects)to see if she can bring her composite score (28) up to at least a 30 (to qualify for some merit scholarships at some of the schools she is considering). She is going to retake in June and then be done with it! (hopefully!)

I didn’t take the SATs at all (not the SAT I or any SAT IIs), so naturally, I took the ACT (plus writing because that was required for some of the schools I was applying to), and that’s the score that was sent. I only applied to East Coast schools, and had no problems. I was accepted to 9 out of 11.

Can I ask you what your ACT score was and where you applied and where you were accepted?

If you don’t like to divulge this information on this website, I understand. However, it would be nice to know if your ACT was 25+ or 30+.

We are also applying to East Coast schools.

Erin’s Dad- I think the last school to accept the ACT was Harvey Mudd. I could be wrong though.
