Ummm, CPAman... Apparently lots of parents don't follow wrestling (Ummm, I'm one of them too, I guess.) But looks like I'm going to start.

So, first. Could you please translate the rocket scientist notation and explain a few terms? (unless they are exactly what they mean).
'Fall over'
'dec' (decision), 'major dec'(majority decision?) what is diff?

Of course, with the score.... I'll add 'Skunked'. ;)

A decision is a win by 7 or less points = 3 Team Points

A Major Decision is a win by 8-14 points = 4 Team Points

A match is stopped as a Tech Fall if you get a 15 point lead = 5 Team Points

A Fall is same as a Pin (Put other wrestler on Back) = 6 Team Points

A Void is when other team does not send out a wrestler = 6 Team Points

College has 10 weight classes

High School 14 weight classes

Just got back. It was awesome! The place was nuts. I can barely speak I am so horse.

My 4.5 hour ride back to DC was much shorter than the Coasties two hour ride back to New London!!!

My son is also visiting this weekend. What a great match to get the blood flowing.

He sent me a text message
"I'm freakin lovin it here! I may not come home".

Ahh ... the enthusiasm of youth. Let's see if he still has that attitude after a full day of classes on Friday.

BTW ... USMMA beat USCGA in Soccer this fall 1-0

But in "real" sports (football and basketball) they're 0-2. ;)

:D

(relax Kings Point, it's a joke - I love watching wrestling too, but for the majority of fans they have no clue and only care about the big two college sports)

Congrats to the Mariners for an overwhelming victory.

Any record the match? I'm looking for link to see it online.

Don't think the live casts are recorded. :( and LFWB -- hmmm thought I saw your scary face in the stands...he he he j/k :D

No. 18 Wrestling Shuts Out Coast Guard, 38-0
By Joshua Mraz, Assistant Sports Information Director
January 10, 2008

Jordan Alfaro was able to record a pin against Coast Guard's Bryan Conrad.
The No. 18 United States Merchant Marine Academy wrestling team beat the United States Coast Guard Academy, 38-0, for its first shutout in the history of the rivalry on Thursday night. The match was held in front of arguably one of the largest and most enthusiastic home crowds the program has ever seen. At the 125-pound weight class, freshman Jordan Alfaro was able to record a pin in the meet while the rest of the Mariners were able to win their matches by either a decision or a major decision.

"That was awesome," said captain Troy McGuinness after the match. "My last two years, we lost some really close matches. I have never personally beaten Coast Guard. It was a great feeling and a great team effort. You could never ask for more by shutting them out."

McGuinness explained how he never wrestled in front of a home crowd like he did tonight, which includes when the Bears visited Kings Point two years ago.

"I feel like this year was better," said the captain. "This was the best atmosphere I have ever seen here which began with the tunnel of students leading us out. The fans were awesome. They got our blood pumping and made it a lot more fun."

Freshman Vincent Renaut was able to get a near fall with less than one minute left in the third set to take a 10-9 decision over Colin Boyle.

Renaut was impressed with the large and enthusiastic crowd.

"I went to a high school where wrestling is pretty big and we used to get some pretty good crowds, but it was nothing compared to out here," explained Renaut after the match. "That crowd definitely helped us win that match. Even when i was down by three points with about 40 seconds left and I was on the bottom, they still kept cheering, and that's what kept me going."

Renaut was trailing 8-7 with under a minute left in the second period before taking the lead for good in his match.

"I felt that he was on his hip a lot, so I needed a last second move. I just tried hipping over and it worked. He went to his back and I got him in a cradle."

Wrestling up at the heavyweight class, freshman Judd Connell got a near fall on Coast Guard’s Shawn Karasevicz in the third period to give him a 7-6 victory at the end of the third set.

Connell described his opponent and match after the dual meet.

"I was wrestling up heavy for the second time this year, and that was probably the biggest guy I had ever wrestled," explained Connell, who usually wrestles at 197 and was up against a much bigger opponent. "I was kind of intimidated at first and probably did not go out as aggressive as I should have. At the end of first period, I thought I was getting (beaten pretty badly), but the score was 4-4. I tried to pick myself back up. He got back up on top of me and I was obviously stalling, but once I got on top of him again I knew I had a chance. When I had that takedown after he shot in, I got behind him and started to feel more confident. Once he was on his back, I felt i was going to win. The crowd definitely helped me."

Captain Troy McGuinness was the only senior to wrestle for the Mariners and went out on top after dropping matches to the Bears each of the last two years. He beat Dan Miller at 184 pounds by a decision of 8-1.

Head Coach Tim Alger thought this could have been the best crowd he has ever seen at Kings Point since he took over the helm of the program. He was getting messages delivered to him during the dual meet from former wrestlers of the program watching the live web cast.

"In my ten years here, we have had some incredible crowds," he said. "I think tonight topped the others. We had a lot of former wrestlers who were watching (the web cast) from around the country. Some of them were having parties together at somebody's house and watching the web cast. There were three guys sending messages to the MOD (which were delivered to us during the match). I would've loved to have sound because it was a great atmosphere. We have had some good atmospheres before, but I think tonight topped the others. I know that a lot of big-time colleges would love to have one like we did tonight."

The Mariners return to action on Sunday, Jan. 13, when they travel to West Point to take on NCAA Division I opponents Army and Rutgers in a tri-match. The meet start time is slated for 4:00 p.m.

Team Results
1) USMMA 38
2) USCGA 0

Our mid called last night after the match. He was very hoarse. He stated he'd never seen the whole Regiment as fired up as they were last night. He said when Plebe Connell pulled it off in the 3rd period in the HWT round the place erupted. Well done Mariner grapplers, well done.

It was great fun to watch the webcast last night even if I couldn't tell what weight was wrestling when! I don't know why, but the for the first bunch of matches, all the wrestlers looked about the same weight. I wasted lots of adrenaline as I had to keep guessing whether it was my son wrestling or not. I know they get an extra pin on their uniform if they beat the USCGA in any sport and I think they should negotiate for an extra big one for the 38-0 shut out! lol! Kudos to Plebe Judd Connell for his fortitude to pull out a big win over someone who out-weighed him by quite a lot. Whoosh-that was a tremendous effort!

LFWB Dad, thank you for taking the photos and for sharing them.

Thanks, but I didn't take them they were sent to me by my son (last 10 or so pics)
