USMMA vs Coast Guard Academy Wrestling

I guess the blackberry worked. I couldn't tell if it was sending the reply. Sorry anout the multiple messages. The matches at West Point brought to light the gap between good D-I programs (Army) and good D-III programs (KP).

We were pretty close with Rutgers. We were closer to Rutgers than Rutgers was to West Point -- for what that's worth.

Went and saw the match against Coast Guard recently and the KP Mariners look very impressive. Coach Alger and his crew are doing some good things at Kings Point and I believe will be a Div-3 top 10 team in the next year or 2.

We definitely enjoyed the enthusiasm displayed by the KP student body, and think it will be a fun place to wrestle.

Our son received an LOA this week and that was certainly an honor and a blessing. So if all goes well I hope to be a proud parent of a Kings Pointer come July.

Welcome! It's a great school and you should be very proud of your son! See you 10 July :)

Congrats to KP wrestling... I am amazed at how highly ranked the team is. As a KPer, I am proud of my alma mater. I watched the webcast of the wrestling match and was impressed at the packed O'Hara Hall. I only saw that once when I was there...we played West Point in B-Ball. But... I now have a son on USCGA wrestling team, and he gave me some news that I found disappointing. When one of the Coasties got obviously injured, the crowd cheered. That would seem to be typical behavior from a generic sports crowd, but I expect more from the future leaders of our maritime business, from these officers in training. While I fully understand the rivalry, which is healthy, sportsmanship and respect for fellow officers must never be lost.

I was there and my son is on the KP wrestling team. If I recall correctly, in the match in question the KP wrestler had the Coastie in a very painful, but legal move -- the Coastie could have alleviated the pain by going to his back but didn't (good for him) -- when the ref stopped the action when the move became potentially dangerous, the crowd cheered for the KP wrestler, not because the Coastie was in pain -- he was not injured, he was only hurt -- by evidence of the fact that the guy continued to wrestle. No one cheered while the guy lay there, but the crowd did clap for him when he resumed the match.

It was completely appropriate and in the best sense good sportsmanship.

Thanks for the clarification. That's not how it had been interpreted by the USCGA team...they were pretty steamed. I'm sure it was easy to misread the situation.

I can understand them being steamed, they were probably thinking it was going to be another easy win like in past years, so with everything else going on, it would be easy to misinterpret what was happening. The CGA coach looked as if he was in a stunned state of disbelief after the third match.

people were definitely cheering when the coastie was injured and i was pretty disgusted with that. a few upperclassmen and myself tried to shut up the crowd, but if it wasnt for Captain Brown getting up and saying something (KP teacher, USCGA Alum) I think it would have been a lot worse. on behalf of the upper class fans there, I apologize for the way the fans acted.

Wrestling is a blood sport. No matter what happens on either side, you will always get the "Rip his F***ing head off" comment, or something similar. It is very common at large wrestling matches. Coast Guard may have be disappointed by one of their worst losses to us in history, and people cheering for a shutout is always bad, or they may be upset because we have more people come to our wrestling matches than they have come to theirs. If memory serves, we actually bused people about 20-30 up to USGCA last year and had more fans at the match than they did. If one set of fans outnumbers another, you will typically assume bad sportsmanship.

Besides, I'm pretty sure that cheering while someone gets hurt (not injured) at a wrestling match isn't as bad as the Coasties chanting "We save lives" for any reason not relevant to a football game, but just to insult us.
