USNA class of 2016

I haven't seen anyone make a thread for this so I'm just going to make one. Around this time students should be receiving their letters stating that they are an "official candidate." I'm just wondering why the website is always undergoing maintenance. Is anyone else experiencing this?

Nevermind it’s up now.

I have received my letter, but I’m nervous about not being accepted since I am more academic than athletic. My GPA was 4.42 for the spring semester of my Junior year. I am going to do cross country this year in order to prepare myself physically for the academy, but do you think this will be enough to be accepted?

GPA alone isn’t going to get you anywhere I can tell you that. You have to be more well rounded I guess. Have you taken the SAT or ACT yet?

If you don’t do a sport, or do not have a varsity, then make sure you kill the CFA. Remember it is the whole candidate score that will earn you an appointment (along with a nomination, of course). Academics I believe is only 60%, half GPA half SAT/ACT. Leadership is 30% (this category includes sports and other EC), and Physical Fitness is 10% (CFA).

I’m candidate for co2016 as well. Best of luck to all of us :)

I took both the sat & act this month and have requested my scores to be sent to the academy, both senators’ offices, and the representative’s office of my state. I feel i did better on the sat. Im working on my pull-ups, even though they are optional for women. The academy is my plan A, but if it isnt meant to be then I will just enlist. I got a 93 on the asvab

Instead of just enlisting, why not apply NROTC or do the normal civilian route and OCS? Your number one goal should be a commission as a Naval Officer. If you do not get into Annapolis, then why don’t you try other routes? At the end of NROTC program, OCS, and USNA you will be the same Ensign in the Navy. In NROTC or civilian college alone you can still reapply to USNA. Plus, with NROTC you will have another nominating source available to you. Reapplying prior enlisted in a lot more difficult. Your number one goal should be a commission as a Naval Officer no matter the route taken. I am not trying to imply that it isn’t your number one goal. If you want to be an officer then NROTC and OCS or reapplying after a year of college may be better than reapplying prior enlisted.

What about NAPS? I have read a little about it and it seems like its for the people who need a little extra time to prepare for the academy, though I have also read it is mainly for academics, in which case it’s not for me. I haven’t looked into nrotc at all…

I also play the marimba in drumline and am involved in the National Forensics League for debate. I have been in the Nation Honors Society since sophmore year (I’m tryin for three years total). I am also part of the California Scholarship Foundation. I am planning on volunteering this year at the local homeless shelter. I am a pretty well-rounded person… maybe an oval, (more into academics). I scored an 1850 on my first go at the SAT.

What did you get on each section of the SAT? USNA only takes math and critical reading. If you triple qualify then NAPS will probably not be offered to you. It is mostly for enlisted, athletes, and minorities. That is not to say that a white male can’t get offered NAPS. If you are serious about serving, I would look into NROTC. It’s just another option, then you can even reapply after one year of that.

You mentioned NAPS (USNA’s prep school). But what about looking at a couple of the civilian prep schools that help prepare you to try again for USNA after a year of college – Valley Forge Military Academy or Greystone Prep School at Schreiner University in Texas. Check out their websites that show what they can do for you. Good Luck – you can do it.
