USNCO 2011 Discussion!

considering utsa qualified for IChO, I would think he is pretty certain.

So, significant figures are important? Yes? No?

I would say ***

What sMITen said… What MC score do you need to have your FR and lab graded? Because I did really well on the FR but not amazing on the MC…

I don’t know… you’d have to ask people who got Honors in past years for their MC score to get an idea.

So if someone’s goal is to just make honors, he could essentially just go in for the multiple choice portion and leave for free response and lab?

Well, you just need your MC score to be in top 150 for them to continue grading, so you actually do need to do the other portions fairly well for your total score to be in top 150.

I’m thinking I got 50-55 on the MC… is that going to be good enough? That’s what my worry is.

If you did like you think you did, you’ll be fine

@ Apoc314

Well if they only GRADE the top 150, that means they essentially only grade the people that make honors…so then the FRQ and lab wouldn’t have an effect on “achieving” honors, other than maybe making high honors or camp.

Is this right? I don’t know if I am missing something here but I just wanted to clear this up for future reference

I guess you’re right, csk90.

And you think you got a 50-55, sMITten? Very impressive. I thought this year’s exam was much more difficult than previous years that I have taken. It seems that others at my section agreed with me and that a 50 would be a great score on this year’s MC (at least for top 150). I think I got somewhere between 40 and 50, lol.

did anyone else think that test was a LOT harder than last year’s?

The test was extremely harder. I really do hope I make top 150 through MC then.

yeah that top 150 part is right too. I have a friend who made some stupid mistakes on the multiple choice but got a 95%+ on the FRQ, and didnt get any honors designation.

Yep. I might have made it from a past year as I got a 50 on the 2007 national exam for MC but I don’t know about this year’s test. Probably got a 40-50. Still hoping for Honors or High Honors. Good luck to all who still have to take it tomorrow.

The top 150 rule also shows that the test isnt about finding the best chemist but about finding the best olympiad problem solver. Just as an aside. If you dont hit your goal I wouldn’t get too bummed if your dream was to be a chemist. High school tests are inconsequential (yes, even if you are an IChO medalist…speaking from experience)

what do you guys think the cutoff for the MC section this year will be (top 150)

Took it today. Very difficult multiple-choice section. 45 correct good enough for top 150?

When will we know the results?

I think the testing period is over now, since today was the last day?

Well, given the huge increase in difficulty in this year’s test, imo, it seems like a score of 45 would be enough to get top 150… (i hope …)
