***USNCO 2017***

@isFress Maybe about a week after camp comes out? I would guess Monday the 8th based on past trends

It’s kind of weird that the USNCO schedule doesn’t say anything about when honors/high honors will be posted when it has in past years. Does that mean the date they post it will be more unpredictable this year?

My daughter just found out her results today. Is there a chart anywhere that lets you know what your score equals?

@melvin123 I don’t think there’s a chart, but the list for honors (top 150) and high honors (top 50) should come out sometime next week so she can get a general sense of her performance
How did she find out her score? Did she ask her local coordinator?

Her teacher told her. Two of her classmates found out about 2 weeks ago that they are going to nationals, so we know she’s not, but kudos to them. I was just curious how she did percentage-wise, not out of a sense of competition, but just out of a sense of, is this something she’s good at? I know she did well enough to get exempt from her final, so she’s happy.

@melvin123 Oh sorry, I thought you were talking about the national exam and not the local exam. Local score percentiles are not well-publicized because a lot of local sections use different exams, but if she took the normal 60-question test from the ACS and got above a 40, that’s already really good because most national exam cutoffs were in the 40’s.

I had a similar question which we brought to the national coordinator. San Diego has a policy of not reporting results. Maybe your region is the same. I found that it leaves the student completely unsure of his results. From my brother’s experience with USAPhO, there was total transparency and he knew exactly what his score was both on the regional and national level. The chem O is different because they pick only two kids per school; so, they aren’t really looking for the top students nationally but rather a distribution across different schools. Also, it’s hard to know what they do with people like me who don’t have an offer at their school. Are we up against homeschoolers and is that a big group? Should I have really pushed my chem teacher to sign up even though I’m in a public school and he teaches every period in the midst of extreme budget cuts? Who knows? There was absolutely no communication in San Diego after the test. So, Chem O is officially the only test I’ve ever heard of that invites you to prepare and take an exam but won’t tell you how you did. I’ll probably spend my time elsewhere this summer since the Chem O is shrouded in secrecy which begs the question about what there is to hide. After all, if this is meant to be a learning experience, we would have something to pivot from…

How big of a deal is getting USNCO honors/high honors?

@isFress I was wondering the same thing. I think high honors is a bit below USAMO qualification in importance, and honors is significantly better than USNCO qualification but pretty significantly below USAMO? It would be great to get other opinions on this

It’s a good achievement and helps with college admissions if you are applying for chemistry or chem engineering majors.
