adchia: did you make it??

Made it! [: Anyone else get calls?

I made it too! Congrats :D

Congrats. Now be prepared to get slaughtered at the camp if you haven’t already taken a year of orgo and pchem.

Just got my call. Meet ya guys at camp!

Sorry to bump this thread but I had a question. For those of us who are studying for the USNCO over the summer, would you recommend Peter Atkins Chemical Principles: The Quest for Insight? I’ve heard many people mention Atkins, but I’m not really sure which book exactly I should use for studying. Thanks!

yeah use Atkins for prep and if you wanna go the extra mile with organic chem use Carey’s Organic Chemistry. If your hoping to make camp and do well there, studying organic chemistry would be a very good idea.

am i allowed to put USNCO qualifier even though I did not take the test on my college apps? I won the ACS local exam, but I was not a US citizen.

Go for it
tenchar

Hey guys,

I just looked at the USNCO local exam from last year, and I don’t even know the answer to the first question! o.O

How can you tell a salt is colorless??

Yeah I suck :P

BUMP 10 char

Bumppppppp?? :(

you just gotta know, transition metal salts are more often colored though than other salts

hey thanks utsamagoots3!

Just wondering…
I’m currently taking an introductory college chemistry course, but not AP or anything
And I’ve been looking at some old usnco tests, and well…I think they’re pretty hard

Does anyone know how I can study? I don’t have an AP chemistry textbook (Zumdahl or Lemay) or anything
I don’t have Atkins either
And even if I did, I’m pretty sure I won’t be able to read it in a month

Should I use MIT OCW? They use Atkins I think…
I just want to get past the open exam :(

When is USNCO local North Jersey?

when do you know if you advanced past the local exam (you qualify to take usnco)?
my chem teacher said something like you may receive an email later this week, but i’m not sure.

For college applications,
How does making it past the local exam (to take the essay and lab) look?
How does moving onto Nationals look?
How does making it to the study camp look?
How does making the ICho team look?

Moving past local exam: ??? the next round is the national competition, which has the essay and lab. See below.
Making it to national exam: not much difference, but certainly doesn’t hurt.
Honors or High honors: moderate help, but probably not treated with more weight than a National Merit Semifinalist or something of the like. If combined with similar science achievements, however, you show that you are a strong science student.
Study camp: a GREAT booster. Almost guarantee admission to MIT. You still need a lot of extracurricular involvement or strong overall academics for schools like Harvard.
International: start waiting for the fat envelopes. :)
