USNews: Dartmouth #9

Dartmouth is tied with Columbia again: there couldn't be two more different schools than this.

where did you get the rankings?

the online version is available i believe tmw and the magazine version will be in the bookstores aug 23...

yea but those are the 2005 rankings.. i think they will have the new ones online by the end of august. HOPEGULLY DMOUTH GOES TOP 5

there are many threads on CC where the 2006 listings have already been leaked.

http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/college/rankings/brief/natudoc/tier1/t1natudoc_brief.php

I bought a copy yesterday at B&N.

If Dartmouth were not so undergrad focused it would have been rated even higher.

The fact is that schools with well known grad schools (and thus an emphasis on grad school students) get a reputational bump in peer assessment which accounts for 25% of the overall rating.

With this in mind, for Dartmouth College to be repeatedly in the top 10 National Universities, as a university, says a great deal about the school.

Dartmouth is known as much for being an LAC as a university so I think it presents a unique challenge to those who view everything in a cut and dried numerical fashion.

In my opinion, Dartmouth College is the best mix available, inasmuch as it has the resources of a University and the undergrad focus of a Liberal Arts College.

It would have made the top 10 in both categories: National Universities and Liberal Arts Colleges (would have hit it out of the park, in fact).

Dartmouth College offers the best deal in undergrad education (and the most happening students!).

yea i know dartmouth's liberal arts focus is great.. but i still think we could rank higher.. at least we are in the top 10

I don't believe that Duke is better than Dartmouth

Well we beat everyone else bar Harvard, Pton, Yale, Stanford, CIT and MIT in selectivity ranking according to me. However because of the many manipulations of USNEWS UPenn apparently rank higher than most of the afore mentioned schools and Dartmouth. Now I wonder if that can be true...lol. UPenn more selective than HYPSD...(HarvYalPtonStanDart)

Alumni giving should not even be discussed. Academic expenses either cause only Pton and Yale top us in that.

Now everyone can figure out what's wrong with D's peer rank (grad schools maybe...)

According to me the best ranking for liberal arts and sciences colleges would be:

Harvard
Yale
Princeton
Stanford
Dartmouth
MIT
CIT
Columbia
UPenn
Duke

This is much more in line than USNEWS...

DO8, uh...Caltech and liberal arts? Science, sure they're way up there, but they are nonexistent in any non math or science fields. So unless you have a definition of liberal arts that I'm not aware of, then I'd say you should remove CIT from your list.
