@gettingschooled I don’t think you actually read my post. I said my friends who currently go to UT describe it that way. Not because the academics are easy, but because of the large variation in academic ability among the student body caused by automatic admissions
To the “why go” question, I don’t want to go to UT. I never wanted to apply but my parents made me. And if I get in they’ll probably make me go unless I get into an Ivy. I don’t want a decision just for a decision. I want a rejection so my parents will start focusing on other schools. They’ve been great throughout the college process but they are obsessed with McCombs.
My daughter’s high school counselor, who is very knowledgable, said the waves are very random, and she cannot figure out why some kids hear and others do not. She did say applying to honors (Business, Plan II, etc.) helps sometimes with hearing a decision earlier than others. But she said the students from my daughter’s school that were in the waves have lower stats than some of the other students who are still waiting. (Surprised and glad she told me that, but may have something to do with my anxiety with the whole process!). She said she does not like UT’s admission process, and couldn’t believe the ‘status update’ they sent out recently, and thought it was very unprofessional. But I know from talking with her, UT is one of her least favorite schools because of the admissions process. I thought this might help those still waiting to hear.
**I am not sure I believe the waves are totally random, but this whole process seems whacky!!
Hello I studied in an Indian curriculum school and my grades are pretty good if not the best, grade 9 -9.8/10 CGPA, grade 10 - 10/10 CGPA and grade 11- 89.9 % (its freaking tough) and grade 12 predicted score given by school - 96.4%(IDK how). SAT 1440 750-M, 690-R; and ACT -32 with a superscore of 33(if it helps) Toefl -110. I have had around 350 hours of volunteer service and I guess my essay is alright, not the best but pretty good. I have done 1 internship in Robotics and CS(my intended major so I hope it helps) and a summer Program at Boston in Robotics and involved in a lot of cricket and basketball 9 through 12. Also I have Subject tests : 800 on math 2, Chem and Phy.
I live in Bahrain so sports opportunities are minute, although I was in the reserves team for Bahrain National cricket team and went to Malaysia for the ACC U-16 cricket cup and also inter-school cricket events and am active in basketball in my school although we have no proper tournaments or organization.
I wish to pursue Robotics and have made that clear in my essay and tried to show my love for it and why I am interested in it. I have strong Recs and I love going to MUNs, I have been to 13 MUNs including one inside UNHQ in New York where I won a verbal mention and have won over 5 wards. My activity essay is based on MUN conferences. I dont really aim for Scholarship, tution should be fine.
I took the ACER examination for Science and Maths(not soooo prestigious) and got 100 percentile internationally and high distinction in maths. I also was a part of a cricket tour to India under CFI( cricket federation of India).
I am part of a global community at Young Scientist’s Journal (www.ysjounal.com) and am an editor and have edited over 15 articles based on Science. I am also part of a community called Young Coders who are working on making a website.
I wish to major in CE or CS and am an international student living in Bahrain, what do you guys think about me?
I would recommend not pulling your application because you are upset with the process. We made our D1 apply to UT Austin even though she wanted to leave Texas. In fact, she enrolled into another college before the mid February acceptances. We almost forgot about decision day at UT '20 and were prompted to look at the portal by College Confidential. She got in as a non auto admit, visited the school again, and decided that Austin was where she wanted to be. Then we had to find housing which wasn’t easy (never did a housing application). She absolutely loves it and found her people. She worked her butt off this past semester with many consecutive nights getting 2/3 hours sleep. Extremely stressful but she did well. UT is not an easy school and some kids that were top 7% but from a less academic school district, fail out within 1 -2 years. The vast majority are high achievers that realize that they might not get the 4.0 at UT that they had in high school. Some classes can even be GPA killers (i.e. Foreign Languages, Organic Chemistry, Anatomy).
D2 admitted in December non auto admit but she won’t be able to commit until she finds out about other colleges on April 1st. It’s going to be a long wait but it’s her future and a few more months of waiting won’t kill her. UT acceptances are earlier than many other colleges and yes, it stinks to wait but it could be worth it. My eldest changed her mind about where she was going and so could you. Keep your options open.
Also I just called admissions to ask about this friday and they said it is coming out on feb 1st not this friday and he said to “tell everyone that” because so many people have been calling asking.
Question: if I don’t hear back until later, I am afraid I won’t be able to find a roommate… has anyone who has had/known past kids that go to UT had a problem with this? Or are there many people who won’t be roommate searching until feb/march
Also, one of my friends heard that she got accepted last night and her cousin heard a week prior which leads me to believe the decisions are completely random.
@Kd6410 Assuming your parents are paying- McCombs is Literally THE best bang you can get for your buck when you live in Texas. they are ranked with schools who cost 7-8 times what it cost to attend Mccombs as an instate student. IT cost 9kishto go to UT if you are a texas resident. meanwhile- all of the mccombs programs are ranked top 10 many top 5 and accounting( and i think MIS) are number 1. SO i totally understand their hope to get that deal. However, since you do not want to go there- I hope they don’t make you.
@18class i think there is an even split. Mine did not- he got his own apartment and next year when my younger once goes there- also private apartment. Calloway and SRD are the nicest private dorms. I love SRD - it is close to classes and priced a little less than the UT dorms with (from what I hear) better food- it’s all girl. Calloway( coed) is nice if you plan to rush. A lot of greek freshman live in Calloway. It’s really up to the parents what most kids do;some insist kids live on campus for at least a year. The private dorms all have meal plans. Also, many of the fraternities and sororities have meal plans - some are part of the monthly fee, some are an added optional expense.
@18class my son will be at Crest at Pearl next year. It cost a little less than Calloway/Castilian and I think a little calmer too (from what we heard). We wanted him to have the “on campus” experience his first year. Although they aren’t dorms, we still consider them on campus because he can literally walk to class. But since we live in Austin, he will be living home after his first year.
Outside of those common apartments, does much anyone else who attend (or will attend) UT stay at other apartments such as Camden Lamar Heights? My brother offered to get an apartment there just for me to stay. I don’t live in Austin nor have I visited yet so I don’t really know much, especially about unforeseen issues :\
@dkmcollege there will definitely be at least SOME decisions that come out before then but the biggest wave is supposedly going to actually be on Feb 1
