My son did not get admitted to UT Austin for Computer Science. Has anyone noticed their admission requirements have gotten more selective/stringent for out of state applicants?
I saw numerous in state applicants with 1500+ SAT scores that did not get into CS and did not get into their second choice either. I also saw numerous instate applicants with lower scores get in, albeit they all had high math SAT scores. I don’t think it is an instate vs out of state preference for the remaining seats that aren’t filled by the top 7% but a more holistic review process.
That’s not uncommon for UT. CS is a popular major and UT is overly selective. That actually poses an even bigger problem if he decided to go there. He would need to maintain a GPA around 3.9 to get into the CS program and even then the acceptance rate is around 35%. Most CS and engineering throwbacks end up at Texas State and UTSA and end up doing very well.
The good news is that CS is very employable out of college and college brand name really doesn’t matter all that much as long as he comes out with some proficiency in a programming language. I went to a regional state school in TX and I had no trouble finding a job. Also, U of H, Texas State, UTSA, Texas Tech, and UT Dallas all have great CS programs and aren’t nearly as competitive.
