UT Austin Honors Colloquium

D was invited to attend the UT Austin Honors Colloquium. This is the description from the website:

The university invites rising high school seniors to participate in the Honors Colloquium. Most students invited to participate are identified using data provided by the Student Search Service of the College Board. They come primarily from Texas high schools, but selected out-of-state schools are also represented. Many participants will eventually be named National Merit, National Achievement, or National Hispanic Finalists and Scholars, and compete for the university’s honor programs.

Is anyone familiar with this program? Would her attendance increase the chances of receiving any merit scholarships?

I’m familiar with it but don’t believe it increases your chances of merit aid, especially because UT is so stingy with merit aid to begin with. Ds never got an invite to the HC despite falling into a couple of the NM categories. But he did get accepted into UT and did receive merit aid! Go figure.

S went a couple of years ago he got a small merit scholarship from UT,but I really don’t think this had anything to do with attending the HC. The HC was both fun and interesting if you have a student who might be interested in applying to one of the honors programs. I went to the parent portion which was held at the start of the weekend and I found this interesting as well. Aside from meeting with other students the HC does a good job of highlighting UT, its resources and the various honors programs. Unlike many other state universities you need to apply to each specific honors program separately in additon to the regular application. There have been discussions about this program each year on the UT forum.

YDS: Was merit aid offered without his having to fill out an extra application?

I truly don’t remember. I’ll see if he does when he gets inside. I believe some of the merit aid was related to his choice of college, one deemed to be unpopular, according to those on the cc UT forum. He did apply for a TexasExes scholarship, I believe, but the extra money wasn’t from that group.

givings, I actually found the info. I will PM you.

Since the HC starts Thursday, if you have not already RSVP’d, it could be too late. I believe its main purpose is to allow your student to see what programs match their talents. The students do get face time with professors and you never who your student could make an impact on. UT is D’s safety but she really wants to gain an acceptance to Plan II so she will attend and work the crowd in hopes of drawing positive attention so that someone might look out for her app.

My son was offered merit aid at UT Austin without filling out an extra application. UT is very stingy with merit aid.

The Honors Colloquium was waitlisted a month ago. You can still try calling or filling out the form, but don’t get your hopes up.

I attended the Honors Colloquium in 1983 - can’t believe that they are still doing the same program. I enjoyed it - but it also convinced me that I didn’t want to attend UT. They housed us in Jester with the football team and it was an animal house! Scared the bejeebers out of me!

DS attended, and it also helped convinced him he didn’t want to attend UT… Jester is enough to scare off many kids! ;)
