Scholarships Out of State

We are trying to navigate the confusing information regarding scholarships and honors programs for UT and would appreciate anyone jumping in with wisdom.

My oos son plans to major in CS. As i understand it, the Dean's Scholar award and Turing Scholar are extremely competitive. My son has a perfect GPA, but SAT is not super high. So, these seem like long shots. Are these the only honors programs for which a College of Natural Science major would be eligible?

Then there are SEPARATE scholarships. Is that correct? As we can't see these until he fills out the scholarship app, we don't know whether it is worth him filling it out. How many of these are there, and how competitive? Would there be CS department scholarships (for non-Turing Scholars?) How hard for oos student to get?

Finally, we did not plan on filling out FAFSA for any other purpose, but the scholarship website recommends that one does this. Is it pretty unlikely to get merit scholarship without need?

Just trying to figure out which applications he should submit.

Hey, so I am also in the process of applying. I live in Austin, so I know a lot of people who go to UT. As far as I know, it is very difficult to get any scholarships without financial need, as they have barely any merit scholarships. I only know two people who have gotten any aid from UT. For honors, I am fairly sure those are the only two open to Natural Science students. Also, getting into UT is pretty difficult for OOS students, as most of the spots are required to be filled by instate. Just FYI.

Thanks for the info. I guess I’ll tell my son to skip the scholarship application. It’s a pretty hefty price tag oos, though. Too bad, since we have relatives in Austin.

My son got a very small merit scholarship, OOS, but that was it. I have heard of a few stellar students receiving more, but that’s rare.

Thank you, MaineLonghorn. At this point, I don’t know if my son has any essays left in him, so I probably won’t push it since I think it is unlikely he would get any money.
