I've been accepted to UT Austin for next fall as an Advertising major. UT is my first choice, but my financial aid package includes practically only loans, and assuming I don't receive any scholarships I'll be looking at 100k of debt after graduating.

On the other hand, the University of Houston is offering me practically a full ride (15k per year and I would not be living on campus because I live in Houston, so that covers tuition and leaves another 5k for books, etc.) Also, if I attend UH I would most likely major in business (either Marketing or Supply Chain Management) and from what I understand UH has a pretty respectable business school.

I know that in terms of academics and the "college experience" UT is far superior to UH, but is that enough to make me go to UT anyway? Please give me your honest and hopefully unbiased opinions. Any advice helps!

Debt + college experience
Realize that it will take you years before you start making big bucks. Meanwhile that 23k loan will continue to build and you will spend a while paying it off. Don’t forget house payment, car, other things for you to pay. So many kids say to themselves i can just apply crazy for scholarships, then they realize their are 40k+ kids thinking the same. You want to risk that for that college experience. What if you go to Ut, and you aren’t even happy their, well that full ride is no longer their. Also you have to take a parent plus loan, you want to put that on your parents or make them just pay for it out of their pocket? Just consider these things, thats all.

Currently attending UH and applied to UT for Summer 2014. UH is a great school but just the right fit for me. I also got quite a bit of scholarship money to UH and yes if I get into UT I’ll have to pay more but I think, personally, it’s worth the extra money.

With that being said are you looking to socialize or strictly focus on studies? If you are looking to focus solely on your academics then go with UH. Financially its smarter and it is still a very reputable school.

Hope I helped and you can’t go wrong with any choice!

Kumagron23, do you mind if I ask why you don’t feel UH fits you? Thank you for your comment by the way! And really my studies are my top priority. I want to be able to graduate and get a good job, so doing well in school comes first. Socializing is still important, just not the most important.

Go for UH. The school itself is not as easy as people underestimate it. I know this because I live in Houston and many of my friends are enrolled at UH. They have grade deflation here. And UH is a very respectable institution (except for its crappy satellite campuses).
Many people look down on UH because the majority of students there aren’t from White middle class family but from the urban area of larger Houston. Hence, they commute to school, Greek life are pretty much unheard of and that’s why it lacked the college spirit.

And seriously, you have a damn big chunk of scholarship that cover all of your tuition. Is it worth that much to go to UT and graduate with more than 100k in debt? Meanwhile you can just chilled in your hometown, graduating debt free and have some money left over to put on gas.

UH is a commuter campus and I’m looking for a more college experience. I lived on campus my first semester my freshman year, rushed, did everything, and it still was just like highschool all over again. Not a very large social base. People go to class and then leave campus with mostly everyone living off campus and spread throughout Houston. With that being said I liked most of my classes. I thought the professors were good and was somewhat challenging. I have a 3.6 right now, and as the above poster mentioned UH uses the +/- system so you really have to work for an A. If I were you and you aren’t planning on going greek then I think UH would be great for you. My friend from highschool is in the honors program and absolutely loves it (she too is on a full ride.)

If you have anymore questions feel free to ask!

@madeleinerodz How did you get a full ride? May I ask what were you sat scores and gpa? I’m currently a junior and really need a full ride to uh?

I would say go with UH easy choice. Seriously an undergraduate education from UT fro $100K vs a FREE ride? UH & try to make the Honors College there if you have the GPA.

The real cost of ut is 18-19k a year. The 26k is just an estimate.
My brother goes there as a freshman for those skeptical. He lives on campus in jester west and his coa was 17k

15k a year to pay for tuition that is only 10k and you live at home, no doubt UT would provide better college experience (whatever that means), but the money you are getting from UH, you are not just getting a free ride, UH is actually paying you to go to school, in fact you will have to pay taxes on the extra dough even if it is scholarship (at least you are suppose to). Heck with the extra college funds you can buy some college experience or save up put it into roth ira, invest in the stockmarket, at the in of 4 years, pull out your original investment for grad school, and still have money for your future retirement. Just saying, your future is bright at U of H
