(I posted this in another part of CC a while back)

Hi guys! I'm deciding between UT Austin and UW right now and I'm kind of confused - both are great. Gah, I'm having a hard time choosing. My 'rents like UW a bit more, but UT seems more "fun" with school spirit and all.

So...I'm a domestic student living abroad (Hong Kong).

ACADEMICS: I'm interested in journalism/linguistics and I've checked both departments. Both schools seem pretty much the same - I got in linguistics for both schools, but I might change to journalism later.

WEATHER: The weather doesn't bother me too much. I can handle the heat/rain so both are alright.

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES: This is a bit early, but which one has more internship/media opportunities? TX or WA?

TRANSPORTATION: Since my parents aren't going to live in the States with me, I don't think I'll get a car. Which city has better public transport?

RESIDENCY: Is it easier to establish residency in Texas? Paying OOS for four years doesn't seem too great.

CONCERTS: The most superficial section. Haha, I love concerts, the whole music scene etc. Of course, Austin has SXSW.

If you have any ideas/comments, I'd love to read 'em. THANKS!

Academics: You can’t go wrong with UT. Solid academics all around.

Weather: Austin is hot from August to late September. Usually pretty fabulous from October to April. Honestly though, this is Texas. Weather is extremely unpredictable. One day it can be 40 degrees and raining and 12 hours later it can be 85 degrees without a cloud. It isn’t consistent like Seattle so take that into consideration.

Internship Opportunities: Texas>Washington. Sorry but that’s the truth. Texas has one of the strongest economies in the nation and is exploding in growth. Austin, Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio are the fastest growing cities in the nation and the job market is stable. If you want to work, Austin will have plenty of internship opportunities during the school year but I personally recommend that you spend the summer interning in Houston or Dallas because the overall economy is better there.

Transportation: ATX is a very hipster, progressive city so everything is close together and within walking or biking distance. Bus service takes you straight to 6th street and downtown if thats your thing.

Residency: Not sure but I think you need to live in an apartment for a year to establish residency, again though I’m not sure.

Concerts: Well this is pretty explanatory. Austin has the best music scene in the nation bar none. SXSW and Austin City Limits keep growing every year. If you love music and the arts, Austin is the place to be.

Overall it depends on what you prefer. The major differences between Seattle and Austin are culture. ATX is in the south, so there’s a more live and let live mentality. Austin is very chill and relaxed, people appreciate the company of other people here. It’s a very personal feeling. Both cities are progressive and liberal if thats your thing.

I got to UT and it was my dream to go to Uni of Washington, but I stayed for the in-state tuition. They’re both in rockin’ cities, however, so you can’t go wrong. Both musically inclined. Here you may have to get used to walking to class in the blazing heat or there walking to class with rain/snow. UT has that classic collegiate feel though. It’s kind of like in the movies.
Don’t know much more about UWA, but you should definitely hear from both sides before choosing.

UT has a beautiful campus, but omg UWA. Check it out. Look at as many photos as possible. The weather (when it’s not raining) is beautiful in the summer and you’ve got the mountains - Mt. Rainier. love it there

Look at who offers you the most money in financial aid, how much it cost to live there, and ratings/stats, and what feedback you’re reading up on. I guess it would be hard to visit either one, but look for the virtual tours and such.
