UT Austin or Washington and Lee??

Hi all!
It's beginning to be college decision time and I have somehow narrowed my choices to either W&L or University of Texas at Austin. I'm a girl from TX, and realize how completely different these two schools are. Any insight would be MUCH appreciated!

I posted this in the W&L thread as well to get both opinions. Thanks for your time!

What’s your major? What are your plans after graduation?

Like you said, UT and W&L are two TOTALLY different schools.

You need to figure out whether or not you want to go to a big research-powerhouse university or a smaller liberal arts focused school. W&L will obviously have smaller classes with more individual attention, whereas UT will have higher ranking and more prominent academic departments.

I would suggest to start your search with affordability issues. Net Price Calculators are now available online.

And when you ask people questions like this add some valuable information

College A will cost me…
College B will cost me…
My parents can afford…

It is amazing how many posts I read recently where students asked how they should pay for college they could not afford.

UT Austin and W&L are day and night, though I too considered both of them at one point.

Negatives about W&L: The city W&L is located in sucks. The area it is very rural so people normally resort to Greek life for partying. UT Austin has a cool urban environment and so much to do besides just partying. Also, W&L lacks diversity; UT doesn’t have that problem. Positives: W&L has smaller classes and a smaller, tighter-knit feel. W&L is a lot harder to get into, so it has that prestige. It also has great financial aid, so it’s a really good option if you’re middle class.

The rest of it depends on you; both schools do have their prestige. I guess it depends what major you’re going to- engineering and business for UT is great, but W&L is better for almost everything else.

The only drawback for me about W&L was the lack of a city/varied social life.
