Hi guys, i recently got rejected from UT austin specifically Moody school of communications and I have no idea why. Hoping someone could try and clear this up for me.
I follow a french curriculum OIB all honors and college level courses. Since 9th grade I had full A’s maybe two B’s each year. I speak 4-5 languages. I was an intense pre professional ballet dancer and jazz dancer. Did filmmaking every summer at programs. Traveled for ballet. I did huge community service for my religion. Traveled to the country to help. Including charity events, galas, church work, walks etc. I have had a two year job with a startup. I did marketing and product design work ( designed app) etc. My rec letters were phenomenal and so were my essays. The only thing I can think about was my SAT score is 1220 so far out of 1600. Not to sound arrogant but i would rlly like to understand why???
You’re SAT score is at the 25% for UT Austin.
Are you instate or out of state?
Your stats are just not high enough. Austin is the most difficult to get into. If you are not high enough in your class to get auto admitted, it is tough! (Assuming you are a TX resident).
Im out of state and not a texas resident does that make a difference??
@sincerelysoph Yes, actually. Since UT is public, they prioritize instate students. And Texas has a law where all public colleges must have automatic admission for kids in the top 10% of their class in Texas schools. Therefore, getting admitted and being out of state is VERY difficult
OOS admission requires even better scores! I think your expectation was just skewed. Your chances a UT were not very high…
You are out of state and have a low SAT, that’s why you were rejected.
It’s because you are out of states. UT as well as all Texas public schools or even private schools are required by government to admit a vast majority of their students from Texas, like the top 7% or top 10% auto admit policy. If you are out of states, you just have to be higher than top 7% and a higher SAT than their 75%, which is probably the reason you were rejected. I have to say though you resume is impressive they should’ve accepted you.
UT admits students in the top 7% of their HS class, that’s the only thing that matters for 75% students. (Their EC’s, test score, course rigor, GPA, all matter for choice of major once they’ve been admitted).
The other 25% are divided into: top 10% academic admits (other academic admits, such as students from private schools that don’t rank) from Texas; then, athletes recruited for the teams; what’s left goes to OOS students and international students and for these groups admission is as hard as getting into JHU or Duke.
It’s also possible UT had no idea what OIB is.
Where else have you applied?
Your profile would be best for a school with holistic admissions - probably those with an excellent dance program, such as Muhlenberg (you can still apply I think, they have a deadline set to pick up kids rejected from ED2 at top privates).
Do you have financial need and are you a US citizen/permanent resident (as financial need+ international puts you in a different pool).
That was the only school i applied to in Texas. I do have financial need and I am a US citizen but not a permanent resident of Texas
I hope that you have other options and that you will consider them and find your best fit. Good luck!
@sincerelysoph – you should count your blessings. UT out of state would have been super expensive. They don’t give much news based aid to OPS students.
