Like the title says, do essays make that big of a difference? If it could be quantified, how many GPA points might it be? If one has a 3.2 GPA and is trying to get into COLA (Econ) will good essays close the 0.3 point gap between that person's GPA and the average accepted GPA? If that's a weird question then I suppose my question should be how much does UT Austin care about essays? And if you've done Essay C, how awful do your circumstances have to be for them to care?

I’m unfamiliar with UT austin so I’m not sure how helpful I can be… I am applying to UCberkELEY and I know that I worked my butt off writing an essay that was pretty damn good IMHO… I gave it to several professors and school counselors and others just to make sure it was legit. So I think essays are super important especially if you want to show that you have the academic rigor to make it at certain schools…

I think theres a lot of weight put omt he essays because there are lots of reasons for the things you do and they want to hear your perspective.
