So I was always planning on doing the CAP Program for UT Austin and attend UTSA the first year of CAP, but now I am trying to decide between University of Houston’s Bauer Business School and doing the CAP Program. I know I want to major in business so my plan was to go to UTSA for my CAP year and then apply for a transfer into UT Austin’s McCombs School of Business, and if I didn’t get my transfer approved then I would still have a guaranteed spot into UT Austin’s Liberal Arts school. Now I am conflicted on if I should just go to UH’s Bauer school so I can for sure be in business and then apply for a transfer into UT Austin and if I still didn’t get into in then at least I could still be in business. I have heard that UTSA is much easier to get a 3.9/4.0 which is practically required to get into McCombs so that is the biggest thing holding me back. Should I go to UTSA and have a higher chance at a better GPA for a better transfer position or should I stick with security & go to UH business. I always see myself at UT Austin so for me its hard to give up that guaranteed spot. Does anyone have any info on transferring through CAP or other schools and how it is like to transfer into McCombs. How easy is UTSA?
**Also note that I have to take 4 prereqs before I can get admitted into UT’s McCombs which are Calc 1, Calc 2, Macroeconomics and Microeconomics. At UH I believe I could take those classes but for UTSA I would have to test into Calc 1 and Calc 2
It appears that your final goal is to end up at UT regardless of which school you attend your first year. If this is the case you may as well go CAP and attend UTSA. A high GPA is reguired to transfer into McCombs regardless of which school you attend your first year. A better question would which one is better. Being a business major at UofH or being a liberal arts major at UT. I you don’t get a 3.8 or better GPA this will be the issue you face. If you do get the required GPA the question is mute because you would be UT bound.
Hmm well I was wondering if I should give up my business spot for hopes of getting a higher GPA at UTSA? IS it worth giving up that safety net of at least being in business if I don’t get my transfer for UT?
U of H sounds like the better option to me. Unless you want o be hypothetically “stuck” either at UTSA or UT Liberal Arts, Houston sounds like the right move.
McCombs is a tough transfer, and I don’t think it’s worth the risk unless you’d be fine finishing your four years at UTSA.
It’s very very rare to transfer into McCombs.
So your realistic alternative is either UT Liberal arts (economics, for instance) or Business at UH.
Look at the four-year degree plans to see what courses that entails, think about the programs that most interest you, whether you like UT and Austin even if you don’t major in business…
Why not business at UTSA? A third option. Could you be in UTSA honors?
What about finances? Do you have a scholarship at UH? Bauer has a decent reputation at least locally so doing well there will get you ample opportunities in Houston.
Get a 4.0 GPA that includes required prereqs to transfer. Get a job, and also get some some college level extracurricular, such as leadership positions. Listing 20 clubs where you paid dues won’t help you like it did in HS.
I went to Bauer and then to Columbia MBA. Go into Bauer Honors after a year of very good grades and you’ll be set. If you don’t like UH, you can transfer elsewhere.
I was in the same situation and had to choose between going to Baylor’s Hankamer School of Business or doing the UT CAP Program and apply to McCombs as a transfer. I decided to go to Baylor since I was already accepted as a business major and I wouldn’t have to worry about an alternate route if I didn’t get accepted into McCombs as a transfer.
