UT Business Honors Program vs UTDallas Davidson Honors Program

Accepted to

UT Business Honors Program- 28K/yr
UTDallas Davidson Honors Program- Full tuition plus $3000/semester award.

I have credits from TAMS-UNT, enabling me to easily get a double major at either school.

Which would you pick and why?

McCombs would be much more recognized by everyone.
If cost is a concern, I would use the TAMS credits to cut off a year or more from the degree and maybe take fewer credits each term instead of picking up a double major (unless it’s a double major that fits in well with your future plans; for instance, CS/IE with finance with the goal of entering quantitative finance or something like that).

UT Austin because of diversity (irony, look at the racial profile for UTD), recognition, and faculty professionalism. I had my children enrolled in a CS program at UTD and one of the faculty got mad at the institution. He sent out an email to all the parents close to midnight, making his feelings toward his employer clearly known, and still has a job! We did not apply to UTD and would never consider attending there.

Thank you! I neglected to mention that I could finish UTD in 2 years, but BHP at UT is a mandatory 4yrs program. Ut is essentially 120K more.

But why do you have to do BHP?

UT and take the full four years.

How much can your parents contribute?
With summer earnings, a small part time job, and the federal loan, you can get $10,000. Can your parents pay $18,000?
For BHP at McCombs it’d be a bargain, but if they can’t pay…

I don’t feel like ut is worth the money without bhp. We can pay about 18k per year. Why would you ssy that bhp is worth it @MYOS1634‌ ?

BHP at McCombs is an excellent, well-known program with lots of opportunities for students who are selected. If that’s the type of major you’re looking for, it’s an excellent possibility.
If the 18k are a stretch, then yes without BHP mcCombs may not be worth it, especially if you have better offers.
Obviously, you should wait till you have all acceptances.

Wow - that will be one of the most difficult decisions! How do the room and board compare – cost and housing wise? Will you be commuting to Richardson?

I’ll live at home if I went to UTD.
I’d possibly save 2k per semester.
If I stayed 4 years at utd, I’d have 16k in my pocket.

Tough call. Any chance to “negotiate” a sophomore admission at BHP? Any TAMS credit that might reduce the load?

BHP is such a wonderful opportunity, but UTD Honors has a lot going for it as well!

xiggi: Galore got into BHP at McCombs as far as I can tell. BHP is an awesome opportunity for a student interested in business, I agree!

I understand that the OP was accepted at McCombs’ BHP. My point was about trying to obtain credit to permit an admission as a sophomore (BHP has both.) He attends a high school with articulation agreements with Texas schools. While I do not believe he will have a high chance of getting that approved, it might reduce the financial burden.

Again, this is an incredibly hard decision to make. We often throw the “take the cheapest school for UG and then go to the expensive one for graduate school” as an alternative. Inasmuch as this rarely works, in this case it might be worth looking into if the student can graduate in 2-2.5 years at UTD and reapply for graduate school at McCombs. The school visibly liked his profile. All in all, he might be done with a BA/MBA in the same 4 years.

@xiggi:

  1. I would not recommend an MBA without work experience.
  2. MBA and BA admissions would be different.
  3. In any case, he may want to aim higher if he decides to go for an MBA.

@xiggi‌ and @PurpleTitan‌ Thanks for your comments.
I am aiming for a higher MBA.

Aiming high is always a good idea. The names of the most known programs roll of the tongue. But it is good to remember that McCombs is a solid top 25 program. Of course, McCombs BHP is among the very best in its genre. Only a strong program in economics might best it.

I think from your other thread that you’re also a contender for an award at Washington&Lee, and then it’d be much more difficult in my opinion.

@xiggi‌ You are totally right.

@MYOS1634‌ I was counting my chickens before the eggs hatched :slight_smile:
I’m not sure if I’m a contender or not.
