UT CS versus Trinity versus A& M

Hello Folks,

D has been admitted to UT CS (did not apply for Turing). Plans to try to become a Dr eventually. Will do Pre Med classes with CS. She has also been admitted to Trinity with Murchison scholarship and has been invited to try out for Tower scholarships. She is a NMF and A & M has the NMF of approx 40K along with university honors . She is leaning away from A & M because she does not like College Station as much. So we are left between UT and Trinity. She has been set on UT but has not visited Trinity yet and at our suggestion is going to try out for the Tower scholarships. She is not into school spirit and games so from that perspective does not care about the big versus small college experience but likes the thought of spending her time in austin and being able to volunteer in local med facilities to build her med school resume along with enjoying austin. Can some of those who have had to make the same decision give some thoughts on if anybody has chosen Trinity over UT and why and also vice versa.

Also another question for those with UT insight. What kind of average GPA’s do the CS folks have and is anybody aware of somebody who has done CS with PreMed. Would it be impossible for her to switch into Computational Bio instead of CS if she wants to try to do that after her first year or since they are in the same school she may stand a chance? Bio is her best subject so Comp Bio may give her the best of both worlds if she does not get into Med School she can then switch into computers with applications in the bio world.

Thank You for any insight.

You might want to put your question in the UT forum for more people to see it. (Under Colleges and Universities and then University of Texas at Austin) I don’t have any answers, although our D will be attending UT in Neuroscience in the fall and did not consider Trinity because she likes the idea of a big university, although she did consider Rice, but Rice is too expensive. She really likes UT a lot.

Hey there,

I’m a current Trinity student with an older sibling who attends UT, so I can speak to this quite a bit, and I may even inadvertently meet you tomorrow when you are around for Tower Scholars Day.
At Trinity it’s easy to get along without much school spirit. I know when I first got here I felt exactly the same way, and for the most part I still do. However, there is a certain camaraderie that everyone gains, but its not at all exclusive to sporting events or anything like that. At UT, I don’t know how hard it is to avoid the spirit, but with a sibling there now and a father who attended UT years ago, I can tell you they have a HUGE amount of school pride. Perhaps with so many other students it can be avoided, but I don’t have any experience with that.
As for spending time in Austin: San Antonio is only about an hour away; I know people who go up to Austin about every weekend for some event or another. The possibility to work in an Austin med facility may be off the table, but San Antonio is a large city and I’m sure there’s something like that around here too.
My biggest suggestion is to wait until you’ve visited both campuses, because after you visit Trinity you may have a totally different opinion about whether you still want to go here or not. When I came to visit for the first time, the campus just felt like home and Trinity became my top choice.

Enjoy your visit!

Did you go to TS day yesterday? I hope so - my S is accepted in Neuro to both - and the opportunities at Trinity are very very different - it is a true teaching undergrad school, with very high rankings. Med school prep is exceptional and you student could do any major and be premed.

We talked with a Neuroscience prof at Trinity who was previously head of Neuro at Mt. Sinai (sp?) in NY. Trinity has over 1 Billion endowment for 2400 students. You need to visit before you decide.
