UT HSH or Rice: Please Help Me Choose!

Hey guys,

I'm really conflicted right now on which university to go to. I've basically narrowed it down to these two. I'm planning on doing a biochem major, possibly with compsci as a minor. Since I'm probably doing premed, I've been told that there is no wrong decision in this regard.

I think the Health Science Honors program is a great opportunity, but I'm wary about the actual benefits of the program. I've toured the UT campus, and I live 5 minutes away from the Rice campus. I do love the fact that HSH gets automatic FRI approval, but I don't know how that compares to the research potentials at Rice. After all, the campus is right across the street from the Texas Medical Center. UT is definitely more lively over all, and there's more variety to be found there, though I've been told that it's a real party school.

There's also the issue of name recognition. Which university is more recognized by employers?
In addition, how is the premed advising at UT in comparison to other schools?

Thanks.

There should be no question that Rice is the better school.

There is no question that Rice is the better school in ranking, but you have to ask yourself if UT or Rice will give you better opportunities. As a HSH, you will receive specialized attention from faculty members and many research options. At Rice, you will get a premium education, but not necessarily the added benefit of HSH. By the way, having HSH increases UT’s ranking in your case–while UT is about 45th in the country and Rice ~18th, by having the HSH you are definitely boosting UT’s rating about 15-20 points. The real question, though, is whether you like the feel of Rice or the feel of UT better.

Oh and employer-wise, the Longhorn Network is ginormous. Much much MUCH larger than the Rice network.

The longhorn network is ginormous, but if you plan to practice medicine in Houston, then there’s no other choice than Rice since the prestige is second to none in the immediate area.

Rice may be well regarded in the Houston area, but nationally and internationally, UT is much more highly regarded than Rice.
