UT Journalism vs BU Communication

Hi Guys!
I’m an international student who is attending college in the US from fall 2019.

For the plan to major in Journalism, I applied to many colleges that are well-known for journalism/communication, and I’ve got accepted to UT Austin (Journalism), BU (Communication), Syracuse (Journalism), and Rutgers (School of Arts and Sciences)

I got 20,000 dollars of scholarships from BU, and 10,000 dollars of scholarships from Rutgers.

As the living of cost at Boston quite costs a lot, even after getting the scholarships from BU, it nearly costs about 50,000 dollars to attend BU.

However, it would cost definitely to attend UT, which will cost about 45,000 dollars a year.

In the general aspect of academics and for my career, employment things, where should I go? BU or UT?

Syracuse journalism is the school most usually referenced in my world view as the most sought after in that field.

Both BU & Texas-Austin are solid options. Do you prefer the city of Boston or the capitol city of Texas ?

What are the net costs of each?
Can you afford it? How will you pay for it?
Do you want access to big cities?

Well… it dosen’t really matter if it isn’t NYC… Haha…
Maybe Boston might be slightly better than Austin? But… that doesn’t really matter

@privatebanker do you mean that undergraduates from Syracuse get job well? or just in academic part

I mean it’s always been seen as one of the most coveted journalism degrees. Job outcomes, I have no idea.

All three are great though.

@booper I do like big cities and I think studying in schools in big cities can be an advantage for me to get a job there.
Net cost of UT is about 44000, BU 50000, and Syracuse 68000
My mom is going to pay for this so I have to consider the economic thing as well…

The Newhouse School of Journalism at Syracuse University is one of the best journalism schools in the U.S. Its graduates get very good internships and (usually) jobs. So if you’re serious about journalism, this is something you must keep in mind.

Is it worth the extra money? That is something you need to decide. I would call and speak to someone at the journalism departments at BU and UT to find out about the internship opportunities through either campus – and how being an international student might affect your access to internships/jobs.

I will add that both BU and UT are good schools and although their journalism programs don’t have reputation of Syracuse, both can offer good opportunities to outgoing, ambitious students.

This may be moot if you can not legally work in the US after graduation.

@roycroftmom he/she would be able to work for a year (or longer) as part of their OPT (optional practical training.)

That’s great. Just something to consider for the long term before spending 200k or more
