Would really appreciate honest statements from UT McCombs Undergrad business students and their parents: How are these students treated vis-a-vis UT BHP (business honors) students? Are you treated as second class citizens especially during Campus Interview and also taking top courses (that make them more attractive to the Wall street or top consultancies)… Do recruiters first interview BHP students and if they do not get enough people go to regular McCombs undergrads? How many of the top companies come to the campus to recruit BHP students only?
We would like to hear what is the reality behind the scenes between these two programs: Do professors treat McCombs undergrad business students differently or are they treated like poor cousins who did Not make it in to BHP?
Even in their website, McCombs program pumps BHP so much more than the regular McCombs undergrad business and how does it make the McCombs students feel?
McCombs has earned its spot in the top of undergraduate business school rankings for a reason – this has nothing to do with and is independent of the presence of a BHP program. Career placement stats of McCombs students are a big reason for these high rankings. McCombs and BHP students really merge classes in their final 2 years and the students in both McCombs and BHP become close knit groups organized by major/career interest. As a BHP parent, I believe the two programs are very symbiotic and there is no competition perceived or otherwise between the students. For recruiting, there are employers who show a preference for the BHP major just as there are others who show a preference for a Finance or Supply Chain major.
McCombs is a great program. But parallel classes in BHP as compared to McCombs are significantly more challenging and much more in depth. And BHP students are very close knit to each other. My BHP student does feel like she has had a leg up in terms of getting interviews but both are excellent programs.
oosbhpparent: If I understand properly - say Finance 301 - would be different for BHP vs. McCombs? I got also a feedback from someone else that there is more rigor to BHP classes. Can a Non-BHP student take BHP class?
Can you please give me what is the reality with respect to top banks and consultancies? Again, I have heard from my son’s seniors that there is significant difference? THank you.
Yes the finance class and accounting class, etc for BHP is different and much more rigorous than the one for McCombs. Non BHP can’t take BHP classes but BHP students do take some McCombs classes. Can’t speak to recruiting for banks and consulting because that is not my daughter’s field but it doesn’t surprise me. At the same time, McCombs students do get great jobs too
In this year’s senior classes significantly more students from BHP received offers from bulge bracket investment banks than McCombs, however, I don’t read into this that the BHP students were more highly desired by those banks. The students who received the offers used their networking, experiences, high GPA, grit and interview prep skills to get in the door - regardless of whether they were BHP or McCombs.
