UT vs A&M (still can't decide...)

“dirty black men peeing on 6th st”…wow, it seems as though you don’t belong at UT, either.

I strongly disagree. My daughter is not only socially and politically conservative, she was raised in a very socially and politically conservative family. But we stress understanding and non-judgment. She is at UT and she is happier than she has ever been. The isolation of A & M would have made her miserable and the their cult like culture is something she just can’t wrap her head around (specially referring to the corp)

collegeshopping, good point. The operative words here are understanding and non-judgemental. There are conservatives at UT, but they are not in the majority; conversely, there are liberals at A&M. They are both great schools, but it does matter what one’s views and leanings are. If one is a Rush Limbaugh, fire-breathing conservative, UT is not the place to be. My experience was the opposite; I was a relatively liberal person at a conservative school, and it wasn’t as fun as it could have been.

I agree with collegeshopping. I was conservative as a freshman entering into UT and remained so. I was able to find many other people who had the same viewpoints as me and felt quite “comfortable.” UT truly has many kinds of students. A&M’s “group think” is extremely pervasive (Midnight yell and yell leaders grabbing their parts is great fun?) while UT offers something for everybody. But, if “group think” interests a prospective student, well they should go for it.

My kiddo is attending UT this fall and is also a conservative. Am I concerned she will “not have fun” or be “uncomfortable” because of her economic/political beliefs? Not in the least.

thanks sunnydayfun! [:

I’ve read some great points here, many of which have made my decision even more concrete. I’m definitely going to UT. In fact, it’s already said and done.

@collegeshopping - Honestly, I feel the same way. Although I don’t mean to bash Texas A&M in any way, it’s narrow-minded, “cult-like” feel actually deterred me, even though it was in lieu of conservatism. I feel that UT is much more open minded, new age, technologically advanced, and change driven. I like that a lot.

And I really don’t care all that much about the traditions. There’s too many of them. Also, I have visited both campuses, and I simply love UT’s campus. The urban environment as well as the architecture of the campus and the landscaping doesn’t feel as old as A&M’s. I don’t think A&M knows what a tree is either. LOL. I find that a little ironic considering their Agricultural department is so highly noted. Anyway… Thanks everyone.

@sunnydayfun - Technically, I may be a sophmore or junior when I get to UT Austin. I got deferred to the CAP program due to my small early college high school only having 8 students and NONE of us getting the top 10% rule. Kind of discriminates against small schools, huh? I would have thought that the valedictorian gets it at LEAST. Anyway… I have a lot of college credits and will go to UT Tyler as a sophmore and possible enter UT Austin as a second semester sophmore or first semester junior. Also, I’ve decide on Electrical Engineering.

My first time saying this… Hook’em! ^_^
