UT vs UMich (Minimal Financial)

I had been accepted to UM-Ann Arbor about two months ago but was awarded hardly any financial aid (<3000 and all loans) per year. Is there any chance I could petition for more aid? Also, my application was postmarked end of December 2005, is there any chance a scholarship has not been awarded at this point? The cost seems much too high for me to attend. Is it worth it as opposed to UT? I have high stats (>2300, Top 3% of HS, All A's, almost all AP/Honors) I am planning on majoring in biomed and am OOS.

Advice?

With your stats you should have gotten more aid, I wouldnt go unless you really want to. UT is a good school.

ConfUser, Michigan generally reserves the bulk of its aid resources for students who apply before December. You applied too late. You lose nothing by petitioning for more aid, so go ahead. Obviously, many people think it is worth paying full price to attend Michigan. I did, as do thousands of out of state students annually. UT is a good school though, and if the cost difference is too great, and I can imagine it is, you may be best served by going for UT.

My twin brother goes to Umich and I go to UT. To be really honest, I don't see much of a difference from what he tells me. We are both enjoying the schools. If you applied to Dean's Scholars (Sciences honor program), you should definitly come to UT.

Aceestrin, very little separates Michigan from Texas. The real difference is the overal reputation of those two schools. Michigan is generally considered one of the top 2 or 3 state universities in the nation and one of the top 15 universities overall. UT-Austin, tough considered a top 10 state university and a top 50 university overall is not quite as highly regarded.

This said, I don't think it makes sense to pay $38,000/year for Michigan (or for any university in the nation for that matter...with the exception of the "Big 5") when one can attend UT-Austin for $15,000/year. UT-Austin has EVERYTHING! A top notch faculty, a great reputation, amazing alumni network, talented students, great sports teams, school spirit, good weather, and oneof the funnest, hippest and most pleasant cities in the country. It doesn't get much better than that.

You forgot the outstanding women (and men I guess) at UT. I used to sit at a cool little hamburger stand just off campus and watch the parade--especially during Rush. Farah Fawcett was only an 8 at UT.

Barrons, I am a moderator...I can't discuss such topics as the physical attributes of the student body! I leave those sordid details to you! hehe

I am also torn between the 2 schools. I'm OOS for both - Texas is still about $10,000 less overall.

Heavy hangs the head that wears the crown.

Hey, I've got a question. Should I pick Plan II honors or Umich?

I would definitly say Plan II...especially if you're in state. Umich doesn't have a humanities program that can compare to Plan II.

Also, I gotta say, with both of these schools you get what you put into them. If you work hard/care, you will excel and find plenty of programs/honors to be a part of.
