UTA 2011 batch

open thread for all of us

yaaaaaaaaaaahoooooooooooo!!

wat bank??

I want to open my account which bank should i bank with?

wells fargo?

Yeah, go with Wells Fargo. It's one of the largest banks in Austin and there are ATMs practically everywhere you go. My sister lives in Austin and says Wells Fargo is the most convenient for students, which is why I just transferred my account to them.

Banking is SO much easier.

I will probably keep mine as bank of america since I do pretty much all my banking online and they have a decent amount of ATM's on campus.

Cool
I've been with Wells Fargo
=]

UTA is UT Arlington...

cool thanks

So then i Will go with wells-fargo.

Currently i am under 18 will i be able to open an account???

@ desperaclo
ut austin

UT is UT Austin, UTA is UT Arlington

You'll have to have your one of your parents co-sign because you're still a minor, but yes, you'll be able to open an account.

thanks man!

Next question..

Which cell provider?

I have a unlocked GSM which i would like to use.

Just to clarify, I'm a chick, but I doubt you meant it like that. lol

Well, I'm on Sprint, which is great in Austin. But if you want to use the GSM then go for Cingular. For the most part, Austin is mainly Sprint and Cingular, so you can't go wrong with either one.

Personally, I would go with Cingular. They have a crappy Internet plan (I use a Moto Q and constantly need Internet), but everything else is pretty good. Plus, you get the iPhone... I'm totally jealous. I'm a loyal Apple customer. SO unfair...

hey
i am also a mac junkie, but wont be able to afford a iphone.

What is the deal with resnet? is it worth it?
or will a evdo/hsdpa be better?

thanks

bumb

Wat is the deal with resnet??
no free internet?

When I lived in a dorm at UT in 2001-02, we had Resnet services that was a flat fee. However, a few people abused this and used waaaaaaaay more than they should by downloading movies, etc. So, a couple years after that, they switched to a tiered plan that allowed people to get a plan that suited their needs. That way, you're paying for what you use vs a flat fee that's not fair to lighter users.

You don't have to activate Resnet, but if you don't, you would have to take your computer somewhere else on campus and either connect to a public port (like in libraries) or use the UT wireless network.

Is the info mentioned on this thread still current? For someone who stays on campus without a car, which bank is more convenient?

Also, How slow is the internet on campus? Is it worth it to pay extra to get the better one?

wouldnt it be better just to buy a wireless internet card?

There is not supposed to be wireless internet access in the dorm rooms. There is very good wired internet access in the dorm rooms.

A tour guide told us that in some spots in some dorm rooms, you can pick up the wireless, so you might want to give it a try before you pay for the wired ResNet.
