Do you guys/girls think UT really cares about things besides GPA? I know GPA is the biggest factor, but I’m stuck on whether the others aspects matter at all.

Essays matter a lot. They want to hear your story and reasons for picking UT.

Thanks, JammyD! Good luck with getting into McCombs! A friend of mine is also trying to get into the business school, and I believe she’s also majoring in accounting. I’ve heard it’s super competitive… I don’t really know how competitive the public health major is going to be since its just started up. Hopefully it’s not too bad… XD

I went to a transfer day at UT in November, and the main thing they stressed to us was GPA… Though they did say that essays were also really important, especially if your GPA was lower than what you wanted it to be.

Where any of you thinking of living on campus, or were you looking for apartments?

Hey USofPlutarchy, I saw you transfered into McCombs. Can you chance me on some of my stats? Oh, and I got my essays looked at, and the teacher said they were pretty decent/good.

I have a friend looking into applying for UT as a transfer student after this year. I really want him to get in but I hope Im not being too optimistic than realistic. I need outside opinions. Chance him?

1) Current College: A local CC in my town

3) Probable total GPA after Spring Semester (in May): 3.4+
4) First Choice Major/College: Communications - Advertising

7)Extracurricular Activities/Recommendations/Essays: 1 year of regional, state, national competition; a couple years of theater/2 fantastic recommendations/great essays

@ cold_katanagirl Hey, I also attended that transfer event in November. That session made me want to get in to UT even more than I already did. I currently live in Round Rock which is just about 5 minutes from Austin. It is way cheaper than apartments in the downtown area, so if I do get accepted I plan on staying in Round Rock and taking the metrorail to campus.

@ fleet I am new to this college thing but, I have noticed on countless threads and searching the internet that the GPA to shoot for is at least a 3.5. That is for liberal arts though, but it seems like it is fairly easy to do an internal transfer once accepted to UT (of course with a high GPA). You never know because everybody’s situation is different, so the best thing would be for your friend to do is apply and see what happens. Good luck to your friend!!

I didn’t see your post cold_katanagirl haha. Thanks so much, and you too! I think I’ll be ok though. My GPA can’t get any higher, so HOPEFULLY they’ll just look at that haha…I’m also shooting for accounting. What’s your friend’s GPA (if you don’t mind me asking)? I want to live on campus, so really I’ll take anything. I’m not too picky as long as I get into UT :)

@fleet: I have a friend who got into Communications with a 3.64, so if your friend can boost it up a little, he’ll have a good shot. But the lowest I’ve ever heard for undergraduate studies is a 3.48, like glitzy said, so really he HAS to get an extra A and he’s pretty much guaranteed a spot in UT.

@JammyD You have a great chance so far. Keep your 4.0 through the remainder of your indicator courses. If you get in, PM me and I’ll give you some tips to make your transfer as seamless as possible. I’d also recommend the MPA program.

@USofPlutarchy: DUDE (I assume so?), that’s the program I’m going for haha. I’m going to apply for it as soon as I (hopefully) get my acceptance. Are you in it? And by PM, you mean message you ‘private message’ you on this site, correct? And yeah, I’ll definitely do that. The deadline for the MPA is June 1, so I won’t have much time to prepare for it. Any tips on getting into it?

@glitzy - That transfer event was really informative! There were a looot of CAP students. I don’t really know my way around Austin despite having been there a few times, do you know of any apartments or off campus locations that would be decent places to live in? I’d prefer to live on campus, though I’m a little worried I’m not going to be able to as the space seems to be really limited for transfer students…

@JammyD - I’m pretty sure she has a 4.0, though it may have went down a bit this semester… I doubt it, though. She visited a counselor there during the fall and they also stressed GPA to her. I’d really like to live on campus as well, though like you, I’ll take anything as long as I get in the school!

@Jam No, I’m finance and math. Yes, private message. I could be wrong, but I doubt MPA is very selective. One of my friends transferred with me, got into MPA, and she is not the brightest person…I would not worry too much about it. Amazing recruiting though.

@USofPlutarchy: Does your friend have a CollegeConfidential account and/or a way for me to contact her? And did you/her transfer from a CC or a 4 year college? I’d like to replicate what she did as much as possible to help my chances.

And hey, if she got into the number 1 accounting program in America, she must have done something right, regardless of how bright she is!

@jammer Took classes at a CC and 4 year. I only have her on Facebook. One of my TAs is an MPA, so if you want to talk to her just PM me and I’ll give you her contact info.

Hey cold_katanagirl, I couldn’t name any apts off hand but I know that apts around campus are pretty pricey. You are probably looking to spend about 700+ for a one bedroom. Any area around mopac/far west would be a nice place to live, but I believe that area isn’t much cheaper. Just my opinion, but I would not recommend east Austin such as the 290 or Riverside area. There is always a lot of drama happening in that area. South Austin off of slaughter is a nice place to live, but it is quite a distance when you take in account the traffic everyday. This is very general advice, because I don’t know your preferences or detailed situation.
I would love it if I could live on campus, but I am not your traditional college student so it’s not an option for me. I am sure everything will work out fine for you, and I hope you get the living area that you want.

1) Current College: ACCD
2) Current GPA: 3.14
3) Probable total GPA after Spring Semester (in May): Not sure, hopefully higher
4) First Choice Major/College: Applied Learning and Development: EC-4
5) Second Choice Major/College: Liberal Arts
6) Courses completed: After May I will have 12 hrs English, 6 hrs History, 3 hrs Art, 3 hrs Humanities, 3 hrs Mass Comm, 3 hrs ASL, 6 hrs Psych, 3 hrs Socio. None of my math will transfer as it is developmental.
7)Extracurricular Activities/Recommendations/Essays: Lots of work experience, a couple of high school activities and one current volunteer activity, a letter of recommendation from a high school teacher, and I only have my introduction essay completed so far but I think it shows who I am.
8) Anything else useful: I’m planning on living in a co-op if I do get accepted, but know it’s a long shot due to my GPA. Texas State is my second choice, likely commuting from San Antonio.
