UTA College of Engineering: Trig or AP Calculus AB, or both??

My kids college freshman orientation is in a month. We have been arguing over math. Yes…MATH. Someone tell me I’m right please :)) On the UTA website, under the College of Engineering, when talking about preparing with high school courses and on the subject of math, i read “additional advanced mathematics 1…and then the footnote: 1-For the College of Engineering, this must explicitly include trigonometry.” My son is convinced that his AP Calculus AB class will cover this Maybe it will, I don’t know. College websites drive me crazy I read one thing over here and one thing over there. I guess we will just have to wait to find out at orientation, but I bet him $100 he would have to take Trig. What do y’all think? Am I about to lose a Benjamin?

Calculus AB in high school has trigonometry as a prerequisite (usually included in the precalculus course, sometimes in the algebra 2 course).

If he did well in the class and the AP test, and is comfortable with the material on the college’s old calculus 1 final exams, calculus 2 is probably the proper math placement for him, and he should not need a (remedial) trigonometry course in college.

I agree with @ucbalumnus. Most high schools do not have a discrete class called trigonometry anymore. When I took it, trig was introduced in geometry and expanded significantly in pre-calc. He’s likely been exposed if he’s in AB.

I think you’ve lost a Benjamin.

Note that he may still need to take a math placement test before he can enroll in MATH 1426 (Calc 1).

However, a 3 or higher on the AP calculus AB exam covers MATH 1426 (calculus 1), according to https://www.uta.edu/studentsuccess/testing-services/credit-by-examination/precollege-credit.php . He may want to try the old MATH 1426 final exams to check his knowledge to verify that he is ready for MATH 2425 (calculus 2).

Note that if he does start in a math course below MATH 1426, it is likely that he will need more than 8 semesters to complete an engineering degree.

Fine. Okay. I lost a benjamin! We went to orientation and his advisor temporarily signed him up for Cal I (Math 1426) but as soon as his AP scores come in (july) he has to go back to UTA and see his advisor who will then change his schedule to Cal II (Math 2425). Well, if he passed the Cal I AP test! He thinks he made a 4 so even if he made a 3 he will be able to sign up for Cal II.

Have him follow the advice above by @ucbalumnus regardless of the AP score.

@ucbalumnus I was able to get the exams to open but the solutions page makes me log in. But I printed a couple out to give to him. We’ll see what he comes up with!
