I am a National Merit student, and am planning to major in Biomedical Engineering.
UTD is offering me a full ride plus $4000 cash stipend per semester, while UT is offering a $5000 engineering merit-based scholarship. I don't care much for partying in college, and was wondering if it is worth it to pay for UT or get payed at UTD. I do plan on going to either medical or grad school after college as well, which will be an additional cost.

HELP!

Medical school will be expensive. PhD programs worth attending should be funded.

Can your parents afford the other 21k IS cost?

Yes, what are your parents saying? Will they pay for UT?

FYI…“payed” is not a word…the word is “paid”. :)

(why do so many kids these days spell “paid” as “payed”???)

UT has a very established biomed engineering program where many of their students have gone onto be faculty at other colleges. With a 5k scholarship, it sounds like your cost is 15k per year.

If cost is your primary concern, UTD is good deal. I am not certain Biomed is one of their better engineering departments.

I am also not certain why UTD is the final choice if you have national merit. There are many schools out there offering similar amounts of money which I would advise going to over UTD if you can get national merit type of money.

Where will you live at either school (honors dorms, commute, “regular” dorm, off campus apartment)? That would affect your experience.
How many honors classes will you take per semester - how many of your classes will be either honors of advanced (junior standing) during your first two year, and how many classes will be “regular” classes? How many students are there per class in the “regular” classes?
What perks do you get with the Honors Program you got into?
Will you be able to get into a research project as early as your freshman year?
What are the opportunities and funding for study abroad? (It’s not easy for Engineers, but it can be eye-opening. Georgia Tech has a few campuses abroad and it does a great job with engineering education in an intercultural context.)
Is there med school advising? What’s the average MCAT score for pre health majors at each school? Do all candidates get a commitee letter or are committee letters reserved to students the professors feel deserve/earned them?
The answers to these questions could help you differentiate between these two.
