Hi,
My NMSF son and I visited UTD. He loved it - the dorms, Comp Sci, library, and students. The visit seemed a little less structured than other visits. Everyone was nice and it’s currently my son’s #1. A couple questions for those who’ve chosen UTD and had experience attending. 1 - has it been a positive experience for you or your child? 2 - approximately, how much is left over to pay out of pocket each year after the NM scholarship? 3 - does anyone have experience with their summer research program prior to the freshman year? Thanks! Hoping my son moves to a finalist and has the opportunity to flourish at UTD with minimal out of pocket.
My DD is at UTD, in her fourth year on the NM scholarship. As far as finances, we pay for her health insurance, auto insurance, phone expenses and toll fees, everything else has been paid by the scholarship or internships. She has traveled abroad 3 times, the first trip was 6 weeks in Florence, paid for by UTD. She has had 2 summer internships that net her about $10,000 each, both have paid for living expenses. Using that money, she has spent a month in Peru and has traveled around Europe for 3 weeks with significant money left in her savings account. It has been a dream experience for her but unfortunately, she is graduating with a great job in hand but it is time to go to work after a 5 month hiatus in which she plans to travel some more.
As far as the Clark research project, my DD did not do that but has known many students that have. It appears to be a great experience. I think it is harder on the parents than it is on the kids. They have a great experience but the parents have to let go a few months earlier.
My son is currently a freshman at UTD. He seems to be doing okay, hasn’t really complained about anything. He is out of state so he has travel costs (airfare, etc).
He didn’t get the $2500 scholarship from NMSC nor did he qualify for a corporate-sponsored scholarship. But he did get a $3k ($375/semester) college-sponsored scholarship from UTD. So for his first semester (and I assume 2nd will be the same), his tuition, housing, and Comet 14 meal plan were covered by the NM package. He even got a refund or $148.
