UTD's ATEC Program

Hi all,

Does anyone have experience with UTD's Arts & Technology Program?

How difficult is it to get into the program if you fall under the "reviewed admission" category?

Thanks in advance.

Freshman or Transfer Reviewed admission?

The only thing i can tell you as a current student, is that you should take as many classes as you can at a community college first. its cheaper and easier. And then transfer to utdallas atec program. print out the degree plan first. So you can know exactly what classes to take. if not then, you will be visiting the atec advisor every freaking semester to see which classes you are eligible to enroll in. make sure you have a passion for whatever field in atec you want to whether its game design, sound design, animation. and these fields have sub fields, like in animation there is story boarding, character development, etc. i have met and am one of the students who struggle in this field because i haven’t a clue what i want to do with this degree. this is where the advisors are a big help. i hope this helped you. sorry about the grammatical and syntax errors, i am to lazy to go back and fix it.

I have heard this from other students and parents as well and my son plans on doing that, thank you for the advice.

Can you tell me about living on campus at UTD do you feel like it is essential to getting the most out of the college experience? We live about 25 minutes away and very close to the community college where my son will take courses as well. The university is really encouraging students to live on campus with the new dorms their freshman year. How is it to be a commuter student at UTD?

Transfer Admission? The transfer admission standards are changing for Spring 2015. The new standards will not be posted until sometime in August 2014. The goal would be for at least 30 cumulative transferable hours and a transferable cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher with a B or Better in ENG1301/ENG1302, College Algebra or Higher (not trig), a science class, and a major related class. Also, if he does not meet assured he should write an essay. The essay is an optional part of the application, but it will help if in reviewed standards.

Transfer students are most commonly commuter. How it impacts your son will depend on how social he is around people he doesn’t know. If he can easily make friends, it will not be a problem. However, no matter what - I don’t think it is worth it to take on a ton of debt if you all can not afford for him to live on campus.

Consider attending a Preview Friday on the UT Dallas campus. The fall 2014 dates have not been posted but they typically only host 2 in the fall semesters.

I was wrong! Preview Friday dates for Fall 2014 are posted - Friday, October 31 and Friday, November 21. The check in starts at 1:30pm, event starts at 2pm and lasts until about 4pm. Sign up on the UT Dallas admission page under the prospective student event section. At the event you will meet with admission staff and academic advisors.

@Marci87 Commuting is the norm, but UTD is taking steps into shying away from that. They just finished building a new dorm exclusively for freshmen (and I must say I’m a bit jealous I didn’t have that building. It looks better by far than any other res hall at UTD). I do know a few people who live on campus but still hang out at the res halls or apartments with their friends.

About the ATEC program, I can’t say about how difficult it is to get in, but my ex-roommate is an ATEC major. In order to have good job prospects as an ATEC major, you need to be at the top of your specialty and have a CLEAR sense of which specialty in ATEC you want to focus on.

I heard that students get ATEC classes based on a sort of “audition” style. Depending on how good your portfolio or grades are, you may or may not get into the classes you want. It’s pretty competitive, from what I hear.

As an ex-biochem major, the workload doesn’t seem bad at all. Most days I was jealous at not only the content of my roommate’s homework but also the sheer amount of it (or lack thereof). It all seemed very fun to do.
